The Respiratory Medicine department consists of the following areas:
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer referrals are triaged daily by a virtual work service that is led by a consultant and supported by lung cancer navigator. This allows faster triaging and appropriate investigations requested prior to clinic appointments. At present the department runs two lung cancer clinics, one on a Friday based at Ormskirk hospital.
The MDT is supported by an MDT co-ordinator who also participates in the entry of data into our lung cancer database. The data submitted to the national database reflects the high quality service delivered in the Trust.
Currently we have 2 lung cancer nurse specialists. The specialist nurses provide extensive support to our cancer patients including Holistic Needs assessments. The trust has implemented an automated Failsafe imaging System for identifying imaging suspicious of neoplasia requested both in primary and secondary care.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
All respiratory consultants contribute to the care of COPD patients. Community COPD Services are available to local residents. These have been developed and enhanced to help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, improve access to urgent consultant delivered outpatient clinics, and to reduce length of stay for admitted patients by enabling formal early supported discharge. This work is being developed as community COPD services are provided by three separate CCGs (Knowsley, St Helens and Liverpool).
