Job summary

The Clinical Coding Services Department are looking to recruit a Novice Clinical Coder to join our highly professional team.

You will be given full opportunity to train as a Clinical Coder with on-going support whilst working towards achieving the ACC accreditation. It is essential that you have a firm grounding in medical terminology and anatomy & physiology. You will benefit from gaining skills and experience across a wide spectrum of specialties. We will ensure you are fully supported in your own personal development.

Main duties of the job

To provide an efficient and high-quality clinical coding service to support core business needs, including but not limited to, Data Quality, Medical Audit and Resource Management ensuring accurate translation of medical terminology into code.

To support the allocation of Healthcare Resource Groups (HRG's) for costing and other analysis by providing an efficient and high quality coding service.

To work towards attaining the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) within 2 years of appointment following an intense 2-year in-house training programme in addition to significant home learning.

  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of medical terminology and to translate Clinicians handwriting held within medical case notes into clinical codes

  • With assistance, interpret histology and radiology reports to ensure accuracy of the coding process
  • To work across the various Trust sites for the purpose of extracting, translating clinical information and the assigning national clinical codes
  • To understand the methodology of basic audit
  • Abstraction of clinical information from the health record on discharge of the patient and translation of that medical terminology using ICD-10 (diagnostic codes) and OPCS4 (procedure codes) into a form that can be tabulated, aggregated and sorted for statistical analysis applying national and international rules and conventions to agreed standards
  • Input of diagnostic and procedure codes to the Patient Administration System on completion of hospital discharge and within agreed timescales
  • To use the Trusts Patient Administration, Radiology, Pathology, Maternity, Theatre and EDMS systems and undertake relevant training relating to each system.
