Job summary

Applications are invited for the role of Specialty Doctor within the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust consisting of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. The department operates as spoke of the Regional Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Hub based in Aintree who provide the Service's consultants.

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the clinical lead in Maxillofacial Surgery (Hub Consultant) and will report to the Divisional Director for Surgery.

This post will support the delivery of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery service by conducting outpatient clinics (including the management of 2ww referrals) and any required treatments within the oral surgery minor operating suite.

Applicants must have a Registerable Dental qualification and Full registration with the General Dental Council. MFDS /MJDFS or equivalent, with significant experience as a LAS or equivalent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Registration as a Specialist in Oral Surgery with the General Dental Council or a formal qualification in conscious sedation are all desirable but not essential.

Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GDC at time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a Specialty Doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. This is a full-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic/Dentist to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and west Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The contract of the post holder conforms to the national terms and conditions of service relevant to the Speciality Doctor grade.

The postholder will attend pre and postoperative outpatient clinics and also assess newly referred patients in relationship to a wide range of disorders in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. They will also be expected to carry out outpatient operating lists, under local anaesthetic and local anaesthetic and sedation (training and experience is desirable but training can also be arranged). This will be mainly in relationship to dentoalveolar and intraoral soft tissue surgery, possibly in the future in relation to minor skin surgery.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical service based at St Helens Hospital provides a comprehensive outpatient service in the surgical specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to the residents of St Helens and Knowsley (population approximately 360,000) and, more broadly, to adjoining districts in Liverpool and North Cheshire.

The unit at St Helens Hospital, provides outpatient services, together with surgical treatment under local anaesthesia, on a "hub and spoke basis" for the Regional Centre for Maxillofacial Surgery, which is based at Aintree Hospital (Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust). A wide range of conditions, in relationship to the anatomical specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is seen in the unit at St Helens Hospital, including patients who have suffered both minor and major oral and facial injuries together with patients presenting with jaw and facial deformity and oral facial cancer. Patients with diseases of the salivary glands and temporomandibular joint disorders/facial pain are also seen within the unit. There is dentoalveolar surgery and a recently set up and an intravenous sedation service on site.

In addition to the Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (four sessions), there is also a Specialist Grade Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ten sessions) and another part-time specialty doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery (1 session). There are Dental nurses registered with the General Dental Council and an RGN (clinic manager). The department itself is fully equipped with four surgeries including recovery facilities and has full nursing and secretarial support.

  • The job plan will be subject to change with the agreement of the post holder, together with the Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and the Head of Department
  • The post holder will supervise, providing support and collaboration with other practitioners, as agreed to be appropriate
  • So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the designated duties of the post holder, he/she should undertake to deputise, from time to time, for absent colleagues
  • The post holder undertakes to perform additional duties in unforeseen emergencies/circumstances, being both flexible and available for such irregular commitments, outside normal duties, as are essential for continuity of patient care. This post has no timetabled on-call commitment
