Main duties of the job
The Bed Manager contributes to the smooth running of the Trust by effective utilisation of operational resources. They are responsible for supporting the Senior Operational Site Manager in the clinical throughput of patients in the Accident and Emergency Department, the co-ordination of all elective activity and the management of bed stock within the Trust. The Bed Manager out of hours provides Site Management cover across the three Sites within the Trust.
The bed manager has a responsibility to work as part of the site manager team to ensure effective use of Trust resources to ensure the smooth flow of patients through the organisation in order to improve the patient experience. To communicate effectively with Senior Managers within the Trust and outside agencies as required. The Bed Manager is responsible for the rapid and effective resolution of problems and Site issues as they arise. They are the first point of contact for all clinical and operational problems and provide managerial support for all staff groups and service providers in the absence of any other Managers out of hours. They act as a resource and offer guidance, support and advice for all staff across three Sites in the Trust.

KEY DUTIES
- To ensure the coordination of admissions, transfers, and discharges for all patients across the acute Site are undertaken recognising the clinical requirements of all individuals.
- To ensure prioritisation of emergency admissions via the Emergency Department to maintain the national standards and in line with national targets.
- To work with the band 7 Operational Site Managers supporting 24/7 clinical site management and deputise in their absence.
- To act as a clinical expert for nursing issues.
- Take appropriate action to address any issues or risk
- To provide clear focus for clinical leadership and to provide clinical and professional advice and guidance to staff as required.
- To promote and facilitate the implementation of the Trust Core Values and objectives.
- To ensure data collection to support accurate reporting, for audit trails thereby ensuring effective utilisation of resources and relevant data quality standards in line with service and Organisational standards.
- To ensure early escalation of any issues that would impede flow, affect quality, patient safety or cause increased length of stay/ delay of safe discharge and to support the response to issues as required.
- To provide accurate and timely information relating to patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, maintaining awareness of overall escalation profile of the Trust.
- Be responsible for ensuring good utilisation of Discharge lounge on a daily basis.
- Act as a point of contact for barriers to effective patient flow i.e. gender/ bed availability incompatibility, IPCC issues.
- To communicate with wards to share information regarding bed availability and patient flow.
