Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Midwife

Part Time 15 hours per week

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced midwife to work within the Perinatal Mental Health Service.

You must work collaboratively with the Perinatal Mental Health Lead Consultant and external partners. The Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Midwife will be focused on ensuring the delivery of high-quality midwifery care that is patient centred, clinically driven and flexible, providing support to women experiencing by mental health problems in the perinatal period.

The post holder will have responsibility for coordinating the care for women requiring specialist input from the Perinatal Mental Health Team in the antenatal and the post-natal period including the provision of complex care plans alongside the provision of input into intrapartum care relating to perinatal mental health.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as a resource and advocate.
  • Through management of referrals, develop skills and knowledge necessary to ensure pregnant women with mental health problems are managed appropriately.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure that there is routine screening and early identification of women with, or at risk of a mental illness.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the impact of common psychiatric medications on women and babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding and have links to experts (specialist perinatal psychiatrists and pharmacists) to keep this knowledge up to date and seek additional information where required.
  • Have up to date knowledge of local services available to pregnant women in relation to their mental health needs.
  • Liaise with other services to improve service provision for women with mental illness and their families and promote integration of services.
  • Develop comprehensive care pathways for women and families affected by mild, moderate and severe maternal mental health problems in active collaboration with specialist perinatal mental health services and other providers of mental health services (e.g., GPs, Health visitors, IAPT services, 3rd sector organisations).
  • Work flexibly across all maternity care settings including the community to provide individualised care for women throughout the antenatal and postnatal period.

  • To take responsibility for organising and prioritising own workload.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain Professional Registration and practice through CPD.
  • Adhere to NMC Code: professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates.
  • Maintain personal standards of conduct and behaviour consistent with Trust and NMC guidance.
  • Provide expert advice on evidence-based practice in midwifery.
  • Influence maternity care to be the highest standard whilst exercising professional and personal autonomy

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To participate in the Trust Risk Management Policy including the reporting of clinical or non-clinical incidents.
  • Requirement to undertake PALS/ complaint responses as required.
  • Undertake Bleep holder documentation when participating in the Bleep rota.

LEADERSHIP

  • Participate in the senior midwifery bleep rota Monday-Friday between the hours of 7am-7.30pm (Early or late shift including the occasional weekend or Bank holiday as required)

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To attend annual updates within the relevant clinical areas.
  • To participate as required in updating staff in relation to Perinatal Mental Health
