Job summary
The Nurse Specialist will provide support for the patient and family from diagnosis through treatment and throughout the cancer journey. Using advanced communication and psychological assessment skills the CNS will aim to assess and alleviate the psychological distress for cancer patients and their families, including identification of need for onward referral to other agencies and disciplines as appropriate.
Provide education and specialist advice to patients, their carer's and staff on the specific care and treatment for the speciality.
Acts as a valuable resource for the multi-professional team.
Set standards of care, influence the work of other professional groups and act as a change agent.
Work as a core member of the MDT supporting the cancer pathway to improve the patient experience.
Main duties of the job
- Is actively involved in the performance management of cancer targets to ensure patients have prompt access to diagnostics and cancer treatments.
- Acts as a core member of the MDT ensuring the patient pathway is managed as effectively as possible preventing un-necessary delays in diagnosis.
- Actively participates in multi-professional meetings, acting as patient advocate and representing nursing views.
- Working with the MDT is instrumental in supporting the implementation of the National cancer strategy at a local level including Holistic Needs Assessments .
- Supports the development of patient focussed education, including training to self-manage ongoing consequences of treatment.
- Promotes the philosophy of person-centred care, co-creating care with people affected by cancer, embedding patient and public involvement within the sphere of practice.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues the CNS will promote compliance with Quality Surveillance Programme (QSP) measures including annual report and operational policy.
