Job summary

The Orthopaedic Department at Wirral University Teaching Hospital are advertising for a 12 month locum consultant post with specialist interest in Hip & Knee Surgery.

This is for 12 months in the first instance with potential for progression into a substantive post in due course.

The role would involve both Elective & Trauma commitments at the Arrowe Park & Clatterbridge sites and would include an on-call commitment. The Clatterbridge site has developed significantly in the last 2 years with 4 new Laminar Flow theatres as part of the development of the Cheshire & Merseyside Surgical Centre.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

Clinical duties will include both trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery and outpatient provision. The successful candidate will have a special interest in hip and knee surgery with a sub-specialty interest in primary arthroplasty and hip fracture surgery. Experience with periprosthetic fractures and DAIRs would be valuable as the unit has a large revision arthroplasty and hip fracture workload. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the on-call rota and be comfortable with the generality of trauma.

Teaching

The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in teaching. He/she will use opportunities during clinical duties to teach accompanying joint members of his/her team and will support the formal education activities of the hospital, the directorate, and the Mersey Deanery Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Programme, including tutorials, trauma rounds, journal clubs and postgraduate meetings. Undergraduate and foundation doctor training is a requirement of the department whilst leading our teaching radiology MDT.

1 Full Day Elective List 2.5PA

1 Fracture Clinic 1 PA

1 Elective Clinic 1 PA

The rest of the PAs would be agreed at mutual convenience with the successful candidate and may involve some flexible working.

The above job plan is subject to final confirmation upon commencing in post.

  • The monthly audit programme is deemed to be equivalent to 0.5 SPA averaged over the year.
  • The post holder will undergo annual appraisal.
  • The post will be supported by appropriate clinical staff.

Job plans will be reviewed annually, following an appraisal meeting. There will be an annual appraisal, job planning and objective setting with the Clinical Director and evidence from this will be submitted for revalidation. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a Consultants typical working pattern, duties, objectives and responsibilities for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a Consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial responsibilities and external commitments.

On appointment of the post holder, the Clinical Director will commence discussions to finalise the job plan which will become operational on appointment. The job plan is an indicative plan of the duties the post holder is likely to be asked to undertake. Flexibility is a key element of this post and the post holder must be willing to adapt the job plan on an ad hoc basis to meet service and patient needs.
