Job summary
Based at Arrowe Park Hospital, this is the only Emergency Department on the Wirral. It provides 24 hours facilities for the care of the acutely ill and injured for a population of approximately 400,000. Approximately 96,000 new patients are seen annually. Arrowe Park Hospital is one of the Major Trauma Units of Merseyside Trauma Network. There are also several NHS Walk-in Centres and Minor Injury Units on the Wirral with which the department closely cooperates.
The department works closely with primary care services on site and operates a single front door for walk in adult patients.
Cerner Millennium an award-winning state of the art IT system for patient management and administration. This system has advanced capabilities to support and manage patient flow and to enhance clinical decision making. It is fully integrated with the Trust's laboratory and radiology systems. It is also used to communicate to General Practitioners and to view in-patient discharge letters and outpatient letters.
Main duties of the job
In conjunction with consultant colleagues, the post-holder will be expected to take a full and active part in all aspects of patient's medical care, providing both a consultant led, and a consultant delivered service. This will include taking operational responsibility for the day to day running of the department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical care and the achievement of relevant clinical and performance standards. You will be responsible for the direct clinical supervision of specialty and training grade doctors as well as specialist and extended role nurse practitioners. The post-holder will work across the Emergency Department including the Children's Emergency Department.
The post-holder will be responsible for performing patient care related administration, including (amongst others), routine review of laboratory and radiological reports, communicating with General Practitioners (and other healthcare professionals) and answering medical complaints. In addition, the post-holder may be asked to take on certain non-clinical administrative duties that support the smooth running of the department such as rota design and administration.
The post-holder will be expected to support the Emergency Department's management team by performing varied managerial duties, including representing the department both internally to the trust and with partner organisations.
