Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

Job summary

This is a full-time substantive post (less than full-time would be considered for the right candidate) for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. The intention is that the postholder will be instrumental in delivering a high-quality clinical service in collaboration with regional Integrated Care Board members. This role will actively take part in the future, expanding development of the Respiratory service at Walsall NHS Trust.

The successful applicant will also contribute, with other consultant respiratory colleagues, to the care of respiratory and GIM (GIM is optional) on-call rota. The postholder will have a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, service improvement, teaching, training, and other qualities as identified in the person specification. It is a requirement of the post that every doctor takes part in annual job planning and annual appraisal as part of the re-validation cycle.

Main duties of the job

Duties of the post will include bronchoscopy sessions, general respiratory ward rounds and teaching and supervision of junior medical staff. The ideal candidate for this post should be skilled in Endoscopic Bronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) or willing to undertake training in this procedure. The post is for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation to cover a Saturday morning ward on a 1:8 rota. Participation in the General medical on call rota the current rota frequency being 1:18, which will incur an additional PA. Total PAs for this role is 11.5.

1. To assist the current team and have responsibility for ensuring a commitment to provide a high quality of Respiratory and General Internal Medicine Services to patients by continual development of practice in the light of evidence-base, and clinical standards.

2. To provide advice to colleagues in other specialities on Respiratory care.

3. To provide a comprehensive Outpatient service and good interventional skills for the delivery of all Bronchoscopy/EBUS procedural sessions. Training and accreditation for EBUS will be provided by the department if required.

4. To provide clinical support and teaching to Junior Medical Staff, Medical Students and Postgraduate Medical Education. Presently the Respiratory department has an input of 3rd, 4th, and 5th year medical students.
