The closing date is 31 July 2025

Job summary

Trainee Emergency Nurse / Care Practitioner

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated clinician to join our established See and Treat service as a Trainee Emergency Nurse / Care Practitioner within our state-of-the-art Urgent and Emergency Care Centre.

Following significant investment at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, our emergency care facilities have been transformed, providing staff and patients with access to high-quality care within a £40 million co-located facility. This includes an Urgent Treatment Centre, Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments, a Paediatric Assessment Unit, and an Acute Medical Unit.

This trainee role offers a structured and supportive pathway for clinicians aiming to become Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) or Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs), and provides a strong foundation for progression into Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) roles in the future.

Trainees will benefit from a dedicated education and teaching programme delivered by the ENP/ECP/ACP Faculty within the Emergency Department. Each recruit will be supported by a Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner and provided with an individualised learning plan. Rotas will include protected non-clinical time to support educational development and successful completion of the programme.

Main duties of the job

This is a development role supporting a Band 6 clinician to progress towards independent practice as an Emergency Nurse or Care Practitioner in the Emergency Department. The post holder will work under direct and indirect supervision with duties including:

Undertaking supervised clinical assessments of patients with minor injuries and selected minor illnesses, developing skills in history taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning and early decision-making.

Contributing to timely, safe and effective care within the See and Treat area, supporting patient flow in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

Escalating findings and formulating initial management plans under guidance from a qualified ENP/ECP, ACP or Doctor.

Participating in a structured training programme aligned to national ENP/ECP competencies and Trust objectives.

Engaging in supervision, reflective practice and skills assessments, with a Senior ACP overseeing an individualised learning plan.

Attending education sessions delivered by the ENP/ECP/ACP Faculty and using protected non-clinical time for study, portfolio development, and progression.

Supporting safe documentation, patient communication and continuity of care in line with Trust policies.

Contributing to quality improvement, audit and governance activities relevant to emergency care and See and Treat.

Progressing towards readiness for transition to a qualified ENP/ECP role following successful completion of training and competencies.

About us

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community healthcare services to a diverse population of approximately 260,000 residents across the West Midlands.

We are proud to be recognised by our colleagues as a great place to work--a culture built on our core values of Respect, Compassion, Teamwork, and Professionalism. We are committed to investing in our workforce, supporting personal and professional development at every stage of your career.

Does this sound like the kind of organisation you want to be part of? One where a former Band 2 porter completed her Nursing Registration and went to serve in the Senior Nursing Team? Or where a colleague who joined as an Emergency Department Registrar progressed to become an ED Consultant, then Clinical Director, and finally Divisional Director of Medicine?

As the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, our integrated Trust delivers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services from Walsall Manor Hospital, as well as extensive community-based care.

Could you make an impact here as we focus on #BuildingOurFuture?
