Job summary
Working towards the trusts vision for delivering excellence in patient care, the surgical site surveillance nurse will be required to undertake target surveillance of surgical wounds post operatively within the trust.
This will include working closely with senior clinical staff, senior management, specialist nurses and members of the MDT on all aspects of the surveillance programme. This includes co-ordinating data collection, providing guidance on interpretation of surveillance data, providing accurate and timely feedback of surveillance results in a useable and understandable format, which can then be used to evaluate levels of clinical service and act as a positive driver to implement change where required to improve patient outcomes/care. The service will be in compliance with IPC standards and evidence-based research.
Main duties of the job
- Be accountable and responsible for maintaining own nursing practice and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
- To be responsible for providing patient centred care. Maintaining own specialist knowledge and clinical skills participating in direct patient care and uphold the evidence of the revalidation process as required by the NMC.
- To have a comprehensive knowledge of the surgical site surveillance process in line with evidence based clinical working practice.
- Use clinical judgement and knowledge to assess patient's surgical wound sites for infection and interpret microbiology data in order to recognise types of organisms present in wound sites.
- To support patients with their relatives who may acquire a health care associated infection.
- Deliver training materials, using various media, including paper based and electronic methods.

We are excited to advertise a substantive position to a full time Band 6 to the specialist role of Surgical site infection surveillance nurse to support the division of surgery to drive our improvement journey.
This role will involve operating across multidisciplinary services and teams within the division of surgery, including wards, theatres, education, and IPC.
The successful nurse will be expected to work autonomously and there will be opportunity to lead on areas of work /specialist interest in surgical site infections and actively participate in studies to aid development, for example "The One Together Framework".
You must be an effective communicator as you will be expected to liaise with staff from different care groups and be able to present reports at divisional level.
A key part of your role will be the education and training of staff and previous experience of teaching and developing staff will be advantageous for this role.
