Job summary
The post holder will be based at the Manor Learning and Conference Centre (MLCC) and will plan and deliver teaching to: University of Birmingham, Aston University and Keele University Physician Associate (PA) students and University of Birmingham and Aston University Medical Students.
The job plan of the post holder will be weighted as follows: 60:40 teaching: clinical respectively (based on a WTE of 37.5 hours per week). This may be subject to revision should the post require exposure to either of the stipulated areas.
This is a 12-month secondment, and the successful candidate(s) will be afforded access to educational activities including but not limited to: departmental training, protected study budget towards maintaining CPD requirements, and supported on departmental rotas.
The post holder(s) will be expected to undergo several teaching observations as stipulated and supported by the PA programme Lead/Deputy Lead at the Trust. There is potential, (subject to funding and achieving a satisfactory performance review) that this position will be considered substantive at the end of 12 months and progression forthwith is based. In addition, it will be expected that the successful candidate(s) will complete a teaching qualification in conjunction with a local HEI should they not already possess this (financial support will be provided to facilitate this). This should commence shortly after starting the role and ideally be accomplished within the 12 months.
Main duties of the job
Undergraduate/postgraduate education
The post holder will be required to:
1.Plan, prepare and deliver clinical teaching material for undergraduate students (which can include: Physician Associate students, medical students and nursing students) attached to WHT.
2. Be available to assist with the year 3, 4, and 5 OSCEs at the Trust if required.
3. Support PA students on their placements. This will include teaching in both the clinical and classroom environment.
4. Be familiar with the curriculum for PA students and be available to facilitate student's self-directed learning.
5. When necessary, liaise with contacts at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with regards to the progression and development of placed PA students, and in addition may be asked to participate in assessments at WHT or HEI sites.
6. Provide pastoral support to students as required and liaise with the Deputy Lead Physician Associate where appropriate.
Clinical Experience (see clinical principal duties and responsibilities below)
7. Gain experience clinically and act as an ambassador within a specialty (ideally Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or General Surgery however other specialties will be considered if there is sufficient experience within a particular area). They may also be able to participate in the 'on-call' Rota in the medical or surgical specialties at the discretion of the clinical lead.
