Job summary

Responsible for the overall operational management of Pharmacy Services at Senior Management level supporting the Director of Pharmacy and leading the teams of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants to achieve this.

Responsible for ensuring that the Clinical Technical Service is working within the professional, legal and ethical framework as specified by the regulatory governing body to support the Director of Pharmacy and Registered Pharmacists in providing a safe and effective pharmaceutical service for the management of medicines in the Trust and to its patients.

Main duties of the job

Analyse the delivery of the service and plan the workforce accordingly for day to day operational activities and where necessary make decisions in difficult situations. Review the skill balance and redeployment of staff and make recommendations for change to the Director of Pharmacy when vacancies arise. Ensure optimal manpower in line with safe, cost effective, service provision in pursuit of Pharmacy Objectives.

Develop and plan operational service delivery in conjunction with Pharmacy Clinical Leads aligned to the Trust objectives for patient care. Advise on safe and securesystems for handling of medicines by wards and departments, meeting legal and medicines management policy requirements. Ensure governance of controlled drugs.

About us

The Pharmacy Service operates across three acute clinical Divisions and also across the Community Services Division provided by the Trust. Applicants will be able to demonstrate significant experience managing a clinical pharmacy service. The post holder will be a key member of the Pharmacy Team working closely with the Ward Based Technical Services Manager, Training & Education leads, as well as the Trust Medication Safety Officer. Applicants must be able to contribute to the delivery of the strategic aims of the Pharmacy Service, aligned to the overall Trust objectives, within set financial constraints as well as deliver agreed cost improvement targets on an annual basis

Follows Trust policy, procedure and guidance in ensuring its implementation in pharmacy clinical technical services. Provide advice to other Trust staff on medicine issues.

Monitor all Trust standards by ensuring that regular on going audit / service quality monitoring is carried out and that adverse trends are reported and auctioned. Ensure reports are forwarded to the Director of Pharmacy.

Formulate and write up local policies for the department. Ensure that policies are updated regularly. Ensure that such policies and procedures are understood and followed by pharmacy staff in all areas. Responsible for producing and writing standards required for inspections including those that impact on the Trust.

Responsible to take the lead for the provision of operational technical services for direct patient care. Work in collaboration with Trust-wide members, external stakeholders and pharmacy staff. Supply medicines to patients on a daily basis ensuring strict governance.

Essential

  • BTEC and NVQ 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent qualification as recognised by GPHc
  • Management qualification, e.g. DMS (Diploma in management studies) or equivalent.
  • Registered Practising Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited Checking Technician Qualification
  • NVQ Assessor A1 award or equivalent
  • CPD /Training beyond the standard required for BTEC in Pharmacy includes leadership skills and working with MDT groups
  • Project management qualification, e.g. Prince 2 foundation

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience at Advanced Pharmacy Technician
  • Management of running a department. Will work independently by interpreting organizational policies in ensuring efficient service delivery.
  • Excellent organization/planning skills. Ensure operational planning of department and service delivery. Engage with Business Manager on business planning.
