Clinical Fellow in Dermatopathology

Job summary

Applications are invited for an innovative post of Clinical Fellow in Dermatopathology within the Histopathology Department at Dorset County Hospital Foundation Trust in Dorchester. The post will be complemented by separate additional sessions at the nearby private laboratory Poundbury Cancer Institute. The latter will require a separate employment contract, but will not require a separate interview/application.

The post is aimed at doctors who have either completed, or within 6 months of completion of training, from either Dermatology or General Histopathology. It will enable the successful candidate to develop Dermatopathology as a subspecialist interest, and work towards the Royal College of Pathologists Diploma in Dermatopathology.This is an excellent opportunity to work in a department with an efficient and high-quality laboratory, supportive colleagues, continually striving for excellence and improvement in the service. The Histopathology Department enjoys a good reputation both within the hospital and further afield, for providing an efficient and high-quality pathology service.The dermatopathologist receives regular referrals for second opinions from other hospitals in the region and further afield. There is an extensive skin pathology slide archive as an aid to teaching and education. There is an opportunity for clinical exposure to Dermatology if required.

Main duties of the job

This is a training post within the Department of Histopathology at Dorset County Hospital, fully supervised by Dr Taibjee. The post is for an individual with full GMC registration, aimed at a Consultant Dermatologist or Histopathologist (or with equivalent overseas training), or within 6 months of CCT, and who wishes to develop a specialist interest in Dermatopathology, with intention to train towards the Royal College of Pathologists Diploma in Dermatopathology.

The Clinical Fellow post relating to work at DCH will be a 5PA contract.

The appointee will support Dr Taibjee and the other consultant colleagues, in providing the Skin Histopathology service. This will primarily involve previewing cases and drafting skin histology reports, and sitting with Dr Taibjee or another consultant to finalise and authorize reports. There will be exposure to more complex case material including cases sent to Dr Taibjee for second opinions. The appointee may be required to assist and advise biomedical scientists in macroscopic dissection of skin specimens, and to order appropriate ancillary tests such as immunohistochemistry and molecular tests where appropriate.

The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit.

The appointee is expected to be involved in the teaching and educational activities of the department.

The appointee is expected to be involved in the teaching and educational activities of the department. Double-headed microscopes are available in each of the consultants rooms, with a multi-headed microscope in the reporting room. Dr Taibjee provides regular virtual Dermatopathology teaching sessions to Dermatology trainees in the Wessex region and nationally, lectures on a number of courses and regional and national/international meetings. The appointee will be involved in cataloguing the Skin Histopathology archive of educational cases (currently >2000 cases), supporting and co-authoring publications, and have the opportunity to present at national and international meetings.

The appointee will be fully supported in working towards the RCPath Diploma in Dermatopathology. Dr Taibjee is currently a Senior Examiner which means that Dorset County Hospital is suitable to provide an accredited training centre status.

There is a potential opportunity for exposure in Dermatology e.g. observing and/or directly participating in Clinics, depending upon the appointees requirements (e.g. if Dermatology exposure is required for working towards the Diploma in Dermatopathology) and skill set.
