Are you looking for a role as a specialist nurse in Diabetes?

This is an exciting opportunity for a fixed term role for 12 months as a trainee Diabetes Nurse. You will work closely with and be supported by an experienced team of Diabetes Nurse Specialist providing high quality diabetes management for patients at Dorset County Hospital.

The post holder would be expected to work 25 hours per week, alongside the specialist team and you would be expected to support the Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialists to carry out all relevant forms of patient care, particularly around education and support to patients, nursing and medical teams.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be to support the diabetes nurse specialist team in the delivery of high quality diabetes management to patients at Dorset County Hospital.

The post holder will:

  • Assist in the assessment of the needs of people with Diabetes, identify actual potential problems and implement effect care planning, thereby reducing the risk of complications.
  • Assist in the provision of education and support to those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes and their families, in turn encouraging and empowering self-management of their condition.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ensure that appropriate support and follow-up is available for patients and their carers on discharge from hospital.
  • Support the provision of specialist diabetes nursing care and advice to individuals attending secondary care diabetes clinics.
  • Support the diabetes team in the education of nursing, medical and midwifery team throughout the Trust.

Education and Qualification

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with active registration
  • Evidence of recent and relevant CPD
  • Recognised teaching qualification or equivalent practice assessor

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Minmum of 2 years working with acutely unwell patients, whose condition is complicated by diabetes or vice versa.
  • Experience providing training

Desirable

  • Experience of presenting to others
  • Experience of managing resources
  • Minimum of 5 years post registration experience in an acute setting
  • Experience of motivating and supporting a team
  • Experience of change management
  • Awareness of applied anatomy and physiology in related area
  • Awareness of standard setting and clinical governance (research, audit, and quality improvement)
  • Experience of supporting patients with chronic conditions

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of hypoglycaemia, its management and its implications
  • Excellent communication skills
