Job summary

Working within the Waltham Forest Recovery College. The Peer Trainer will have lived experience of mental health issues and/or services. They will have the ability to inspire, model and inform others, and to draw positively on their own experience to deliver recovery courses and workshops to the Recovery College's students.

The Peer Trainer will work alongside the Recovery College Lead, users of services, carers, volunteers, and staff, to co-design, plan and successfully deliver the workshops and courses for the Waltham Forest Recovery College. Courses are focused on providing a better understanding of mental health issues, learning, and developing people's life skills and knowledge.

Main duties of the job

To plan, co-design, develop and co-deliver recovery focused courses and workshops.

Support services users to actively engage in the Recovery College.

To support the promotion of the Recovery College.

To work with students to assess their learning needs which aim to improve their mental health condition and enable them to understand, self-manage and where appropriate, change their behaviour

To act as a role model to service users to inspire hope, share life experiences and lessons learned as a person in recovery.

To work in a manner that respects and acknowledges the cultural, social, personal, and spiritual strengths and needs of service users.

Signpost / promote resources and access to community groups and networks that enable service users to participate in community activities.

To collaborate with co-workers, including Trust colleagues, peers, and external co-production partners.

Support other members of the team in promoting a recovery orientated environment and in identifying recovery focused activities, information/education as required

To participate in the Recovery College steering group and other relevant meetings.

Report any incident/untoward incidents/near misses to self, patients or carers to the Recovery College Clinical Lead.

About us

Starting with NELFTNELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).High Cost Area Supplement - London

This post attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,551 and a maximum payment of £5,735 per annum pro rata).Use of AIApplications for this role should be written by the applicant. Working collaboratively with the Recovery College Administrator

To be able to effectively communicate with colleagues, peers, managers and with organisations in the delivery of the college.

Support data collection and evidence gathering, as part of the review and evaluation of the college.

Report any untoward incidents or unusual occurrences or concerns to the Recovery College lead as soon as practically possible.

Training & Development

To undertake mandatory training and workshops.

To undertake a regular appraisal, developing a personal development plan that includes competencies relevant to the identified post.

To maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to Recovery College, the specific service user group and peer support.

To raise the profile of the Recovery College and the role of Peer Trainer within NELFT and to external organisations. Where relevant delivery of presentations, workshops, and participation in Trust-wide peer related projects and audits.

To work with Recovery College Lead using regular supervision to monitor job role and function and in identifying own areas for development.

To participate in regular peer supervision sessions
