Job summary

As a Band 7 Occupational Therapist in the Intensive Support Team for individuals with learning disabilities, you will play a key role in providing specialized occupational therapy services to individuals experiencing crisis situations. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver intensive community-based support, focusing on promoting independence, enhancing daily functioning, and facilitating individuals' engagement in meaningful activities within their familiar environment. In-reach into inpatient settings may be required at times.

Main duties of the job

Functional Assessment:

  • Conduct comprehensive functional assessments to evaluate individuals' physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional abilities.
  • Assess individuals' skills and challenges in activities of daily living (ADLs), including self-care, meal preparation, household tasks, and community participation.

Activity Modification and Adaptation:

  • Collaborate with individuals and their families to modify or adapt activities and environments to promote independence and participation.
  • Recommend and facilitate the use of assistive devices, adaptive equipment, and environmental modifications to optimize functional performance.

Skill Development and Rehabilitation:

  • Provide interventions to help individuals develop or regain specific skills necessary for daily functioning.
  • Implement therapeutic techniques and activities to improve fine motor skills, coordination, visual-perceptual skills, sensory integration, and cognitive abilities.

Sensory Integration:

  • Address sensory processing difficulties by developing strategies to regulate and process sensory information effectively.
  • Collaborate with individuals, families, and support networks to create sensory-friendly environments and develop sensory plans.
  • Be willing to undertake training and development opportunities to increase confidence and competence in addressing individuals sensory needs.

About us

Starting with Us

NELFT places great importance on new starters being properly welcomed into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks, including mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process, new starters will also have the opportunity to meet the executive team, senior managers, and attend several drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing, and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High-Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,714 and a maximum payment of £5,941) (pro rata for part time staff).

Essential

  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • Registration with Health Professionals Council
  • Evidence of CPD in Portfolio (with recent learning relevant to clinical field).

Desirable

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Member of COT
  • Member of Specialist Interest group

oAddress sensory processing difficulties by developing strategies to regulate

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years post qualification experience, 3 years of which in learning disability setting, mental health setting or related field.
  • Working with people with severe and enduring mental illness and/or complex needs.
  • Care-coordinating under CPA / experience of case management

  • Applying O.T models of practice in a complex setting
  • Evaluating evidence base for mental health and occupational therapy.
