Job summary

Brookside is looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 OT that would like the experience of working within an exciting and award winning child and adolescent inpatient team.

The multiple award winning service includes a 15 bedded general acute unit for 12-18 year olds. Brookside provides intensive therapeutic treatment involving the young people and their families/cares.

Brookside's OT team is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, skilled, innovative and caring OT who has a keen interest in promoting positive mental health and valuing young people's wellbeing. This is a great opportunity for a motivated and inspiring individual to join an established and forward thinking team. The priority for this post is direct clinical work, providing individual occupational therapy assessments and interventions based on the needs of the young people and their families. The post holder will also be required to work closely with the ward and MDT including psychologist and doctors to ensure the effective care and treatment of young people. A large aspect of the role will be to devise and facilitate the wards therapeutic program in cohesion with the other Band 5 ward OT and to continue the development and provision of the therapeutic timetable.

Main duties of the job

  1. Being creative and innovative in the design and facilitation of an inclusive and creative therapeutic programme
  2. Using creativity and enthusiasm to motivate young people to engage with meaningful occupation.
  3. Work cohesively with the OT team across all of Brookside services
  4. Complete OT evidence based assessments and intervention's
  5. Complete specialised OT assessments such as sensory profiles (training is provided)
  6. Support and manage social and educational reintegration
  7. Support MDT in therapeutic management of interventions
  8. Support Brookside's on site school with school reintegration
  9. Remain in date with mandatory training and be interested in exploring specialised training
  10. Complete group protocols inclusive of risk assessments
  11. Creating individualised care plans and remaining compliant with documentation
  12. Provide OT interventions based on current and informed evidence based practice
  13. Enthusiastic and passionate about ongoing training
  14. Remaining up to date with supervision
  15. Effectively communicating with the divisional lead OT and OT peers
  16. Responsible for undertaking comprehensive clinical assessments of service users.
  17. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate Occupational Therapy treatments for specialist case load, in a variety of settings, as an autonomous practitioner.
  18. Provide specialist clinical advice to other team members on the suitability of various assessments and intervention methods where appropriate.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process, new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High-Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436).

Our ward has a specialised sensory room, calming room, OT room with kitchen, large inside activity hall, 2 outside tennis courts, trampoline for rebound therapy, outdoor gym equipment, a school including an art and science room and large grounds. We are currently building our own OT garden to provide horticultural experiences and currently working with the NELFT charity to get funding to build an onsite sensory garden. All of which help provide an excellent therapeutic program.You will be expected to meet the changing needs of the population we work with and provide high quality, flexible therapeutic assessment and intervention for our varied caseload. The role will provide opportunities to work with a wider MDT to deliver a range of interventions with a focus on supporting young people to have successful discharge from hospital and back into the community. There is a priority to work closely with education, health and social care colleagues to minimise the social exclusion risks for the young people.

This post would suit an individual who enjoys spending time with young people, has a sense of fun and is able to bring innovation and creativity to their work.

All occupational therapists receive professional supervision from an OT and will be expected to attend mandatory training and keep up to date with their CPD.There is opportunity to complete a preceptorship program if required.We work closely with our Young Persons Home Treatment team and work within NICE guidance regarding treatment pathways. This is a well-established and continually developing service with a large energetic multidisciplinary team, committed to fully extending the range of therapeutic services offered.

Brookside is on a green field site, has easy parking and is rapidly accessible from North and East London. There are also good connections on the rail and tube.
