Job summary

Community Psychologist Havering (Clinical / Counselling Psychologist) based in Mental Health and Wellness Team - band 7 to 8a preceptorship

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic innovative, creative and flexible Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to help shape the future of mental health services in Havering, joining the first Neighbourhood teams set up to deliver the NHS Long Term Plan transformation of Community Mental health. This Community Psychologist post is under a band 7 preceptorship to promote development into an 8a post through the appraisal process.

The post holder will join a new team of colleagues to lead on and champion psychologically minded and trauma informed care, working to community psychology principles. Central to this is co-production, understanding and meeting the needs of local populations, engaging with communities, and working in partnership with service users and carers, as well as voluntary sector and Local Authority colleagues. You will be part of making this change in service delivery, while developing your own skills and forging a progressive career pathway. We will support and invest in any further clinical training, and leadership development. The Neighbourhood teams will work to Open Dialogue principles and successful applicant will have the opportunity to train in this approach.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with the trauma leads for the Trust to develop strategic influence and a good applicant would be passionate about addressing discrimination and inequalities, having awareness of how both these factors affect mental health and recovery. The post holder will be skilled in psychological approaches for adults presenting with Complex Emotional Needs/Personality Disorder. You will receive supervision and professional support from Psychological Professions in Havering and across the Trust.

The successful candidate will work closely with secondary psychology colleagues to add to an already passionate and dynamic psychology provision in Havering. This group of psychologists are forward-thinking and value diversity. We are currently in the process of transforming services (in line with NHS long term plan), and the post holder will join at an exciting time whereby they will gain many leadership opportunities to develop the pathway and interface with other secondary and acute services. We value the importance of richness in delivering secondary care services to effectively meet the needs of the population we serve, therefore integrated working with care coordinators and peer worker colleagues in Barking and Dagenham Community Recovery Teams based at Barking Community Hospital is essential.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We are keen to develop psychologists who join the pathway, so work hard to provide opportunities that fit with individuals personal interests. Specialist training to deliver CBTp and FIp are routinely encouraged and supported. There is also amazing Trust wide training (i.e., EMDR) which can be provided, and teaching on local DclinPsych courses. Theres much research that happens across the Trust, so opportunities to engage can be sought. For example, our borough is supporting the AVATAR part II trial, and training to deliver this novel and exciting therapy is possible. We are keen to recruit people who share a vision of contributing to best practice, national guidelines and an evidence base.

The successful candidate will receive expert supervision in family interventions, alongside supervision for CBT for psychosis, including individual supervision from a more senior psychologist. There are also opportunities to develop and join specialist interest groups and peer supervision. We are keen for the successful candidate to have an interest in and understanding in Community Psychology principles and are keen to arrange for specialist Community Psychology supervision and support.

The boroughs covered by NELFT are very diverse, therefore a good applicant would be passionate about addressing discrimination and inequalities in accessing services and narratives around illness. Having an awareness of how these factors affect mental health and recovery are important and we would encourage applicants to apply who represent this diversity. We would also encourage applicants with lived experience of mental health difficulties and/or caring responsibilities to apply recognising the importance of this expertise and the representation of these voices.

The NELFT Mental Health Transformation Programme

In collaboration with partners and our service users across Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest, NELFT has recently launched its Mental Health Transformation Programme. Our collective vision for the programme is to radically transform our whole model of Mental Health Care and Support over the next 3 years and beyond. Increasing levels of demand and complexity in our population, coupled with new funding flows for mental health mean we have an exciting opportunity to reimagine how we deliver care across all age groups and levels of need. Our aims include a greater focus on addressing health inequalities, prevention and wellbeing and delivering more integrated and personalised care closer to home:

The first phase of our programme is focused on delivering our new model of community-based care and support. Working with Primary Care Networks and local partners in each borough, we are developing multi-agency, integrated and place-based neighbourhood teams (Mental Health and Wellness Teams) that support people with serious mental health needs to receive their care closer to home. This ambition includes developing a new workforce with lived experience, more flexible working and continuity of care, better integration with physical health and social care and enabling greater resilience through working with third sector partners. Our aim is not just to redesign care pathways, but to develop a new ethos and culture that helps transform how we work together with partners as one team sharing care. As per the new NHSE Framework, our new teams will be trauma informed and person-centred, putting relationships back into the heart of care and all team members will receive training in Open Dialogue and systemic ways of working to enable this.

The role outlined below is integral to the Transformation Programme. The post-holder will work closely as a key member of the programme team, bringing a hands-on and practical approach and helping to define, lead and drive change. The role represents a unique opportunity to help shape and deliver an ambitious and radical programme of change, co-produced with colleagues from across the health and care landscape and with service users for the benefit of our local populations.

Havering

Havering is a richly diverse and multi-cultural borough with an excellent network of external agencies with whom we are increasing our linkworking to improve the holistic approach to service user care. As the only borough within NELFT with a designated Carers Lead , there are exciting opportunities to facilitate further changes benefitting both clients and their families. We would encourage applicants to apply who represent this diversity. We would also encourage applicants with lived experience of mental health difficulties and/or caring responsibilities to apply recognising the importance of this expertise and the representation of these voices. Havering is a semi-rural borough with large open green spaces whilst also benefiting from excellent transport links with London and the wider county of Essex.

Please see Job Description and Person Specification for more details of applicant requirements for the post. Job share and flexible working will be considered.

For an informal discussion, please contact Joanne Guerin, Associate Director Havering Adult Mental Health & Learning Disability, Havering Integrated Care Directorate (joanne.guerin@nelft.nhs.uk) or
