Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Gastroenterologist to support our service, pending finalisation of 2 substantive posts, 1 replacement (IBD) 1 new Upper GI cancer Co-Lead. The post will be based at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (THHFT) within the Gastroenterology department. The post consists of 11 Programmed Activities comprised of 8 Direct Clinical Activities and 2 Supporting Professional Activities. The post holders will be on call on the acute gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) rota covering THH and Harefield Hospital on a 1 week in 7 basis for an additional 1 PA. There is no General Medicine on call commitment.

The successful candidate will join the six existing consultants, Dr Grover (Hepatology and Gastroenterology Clinical Lead), Dr Lean (Upper GI cancer Lead), Dr Postgate (ERCP and Interventional Endoscopy), Dr Rameshshanker (complex Interventional Endoscopy, ERCP and Endoscopy Lead), Dr Arun Rajendran (Endoscopy Training Lead) and Dr Sid Oke (Nutrition Lead). The department works closely as a cohesive clinical team with complimentary interests. We are primarily looking for an individual who will work well with our team in our fantastic Unit. We would be delighted to meet any potentially interested candidates.

A complimentary interest to those in the department such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Oesophageal physiology, Nutrition, Education or Hepatology. ERCP is not a requirement for the post but may be accommodated.

Main duties of the job

Duties/ responsibilities of the post

The post holders will, together with their consultant colleagues and other health care professionals in the Division, provide an effective and comprehensive service for our patients and support continuing service developments. The Gastroenterology Clinical Lead will be the immediate line manager.

The post holders will be able to participate in the on-call GI bleed/ Gastroenterology rota on an approximately 1:7 basis with full recruitment.

Job responsibilities

Applicants must have full GMC registration as well as experience of working in the NHS. They should have or be within six months of CCT in Gastroenterology and Medicine.

Duties/ responsibilities of the post

This locum post is whilst we finalise the job description for the posts to lead the Inflammatory Bowel Disease service and co-Lead the upper GI 2WW service.

  1. The post-holder will work closely with their colleagues, be responsible for providing a high-quality gastroenterological service to the residents of Hillingdon, and for development of services appropriate to these ends. This includes vetting of general gastroenterology referrals and review of these patients in clinics (face to face, telephone and paper/ virtually). IBD clinic dependent upon skillset of the individual.

  1. The post-holder will participate in the bleeding rota; providing emergency out-of-hours Gastroenterology cover to both Harefield Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital. Currently this is non-resident, with future job planning this may involve a regular on-site commitment. We are negotiating to withdraw from the Harefield commitment, to focus clinical time at the Hillingdon site.

  1. The post-holder will, within a Team, be jointly responsible for running an inpatient and outpatient service for gastroenterology including an advisory service for colleagues.

  1. The post-holder will participate with his/her colleagues in the training and professional development of medical and other professional staff for whom he/she is responsible. He/she will also be involved in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programme and General Practitioner education.

  1. The post-holder will be expected to continue his/her own professional development (CPD) and revalidation in line with guidance from the relevant professional bodies and within the framework of clinical governance. The post-holder will be expected to help the department meet its objective of JAG accreditation.

  1. The post-holder will be expected to work with the other Gastroenterology Consultants to ensure the Trust meets the various national waiting time targets.

  1. The post-holder will be expected to provide clear evidence of their SPA activities. This includes clinical and educational supervision, audit and personal CPD. Personal CPD must be included as part of annual appraisal which is mandatory and required for the revalidation process. Performing / leading at least 1 medical audit per year.

  1. The post-holder will be encouraged to develop any areas of expertise of special interest that he or she may have in Gastroenterology, in accordance with the service needs of the Department.

  1. Participation in the medical advisory and liaison work of the hospital Consultant Staff Committee and to share the workload of the involvement in any other committees relating to the Medicine and Gastroenterology Departments, for example (not an exhaustive list) Clinical Governance, Safeguarding Adults, Transfusion, Resuscitation, Medicines Management etc.

  1. To collaborate with the Lead Clinician and the Senior Nurse Management Team in the development and implementation of all relevant policies for the running of the department

To work with the consultant team in the recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff in consultation with the Department of People and Development and the Unplanned Care Senior Nurse Management Team. They will help to organise and give guidance to the deployment of junior staff duties including allocation and supervision of clinical work where necessary and support their use of the Trust Digital systems.
