Job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an AHP Education & Workforce Lead to join Hillingdon Hospital. You will be working with our AHP services including Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practitioners, Orthoptics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Speech and Language Therapy. This is a diverse and challenging role that would be suitable for a confident, skilled and dedicated AHP who wants to make a difference.

Main duties of the job

This role will involve leading the delivery of our Education and Workforce strategy and objectives.The post holder will review and scope the workforce requirements as well as the learning and development needs for registered & non-registered AHP workforce across the Trust and support departmental managers to explore and implement initiatives to improve recruitment and retention, preceptorship, apprenticeships and advanced roles.

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust's services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

Leadership and Management

Support the AHP leads with AHP efficiencies review and assurance meetings, leading on the analysis of data, identification of trends and areas for focus.

Support the AHP leads with preparation of data for safer staffing reports to provide assurance to the Board and other agencies regarding safe and effective AHP staffing levels.

Lead the coordination of the AHP establishment reviews utilising evidence-based tools, and robust acuity and dependency data. Ensuring there is robust presentation of evidence and recommendations in line with NHS Improvement and National Quality Board requirements.

Operate as an effective change manager, ensuring ongoing engagement with stakeholders.

Lead the development of robust implementation plans for AHP workforce transformation projects and oversee their delivery to ensure sustained service improvement.

Work with senior management colleagues from across the organisation to ensure that a positive safety and quality culture regarding staffing levels prevails enabling AHP leaders to review practice, identify risk, and resolve gaps.

Provide strong and effective leadership that supports collaborative and innovative working with colleagues across the Trust and within the AHP service.

Demonstrate effective influencing and leadership skills with staff across the organisation in relation to nursing workforce matters.

Be an active member of the AHP Faculty, providing expertise in shaping strategic workforce decisions.

Support the AHP Leads prepare for, and attend as required, Board meetings, or meetings of committees of the board, or external scrutiny or stakeholder meetings where nursing workforce declarations and/or outputs are being presented or reviewed.

Keep abreast of future AHP workforce strategy, including new roles and service model designs. Represent the Trust at associated meetings and conferences as requested and working collaboratively with colleagues across the Trust lead on work to implement these changes as delegated by the AHP Leads.

Communicate clearly, confidently, accurately and credibly when being challenged or under scrutiny. Also to be able to communicate to senior managers within the organisation as well as large groups both internal and external to the Trust

Directly manage and leaf AHP workforce and education team which may include practice educators, preceptorship and apprentice leads.

Education

To lead on the delivery of The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (THHFT) AHP education strategy and workforce plan, including AHP professional development and delivery developing an education structure.

To provide expertise and relationship management between AHP teams across THHFT.

To develop an education strategy encompassing inequalities, clinician learning needs assessment, mapping current education provision and plans, and providing recommendations to stakeholders.

To advise on how specific priorities should be best supported through commissioning processes for education/training.

To advise & support commissioners on: using education/training to improve patient experience and outcomes of care; link with wider primary care and patient experience programmes where appropriate; embedding our education resources into STP delivery, and collaboration between stakeholders including NHS England.

To seek opportunities to embed AHP educational activities into mainstream curriculum for primary and community healthcare professionals and at all levels.

To horizon scan educational funding opportunities.

Responsible for the monitoring and delivery of projects within THHFT Education and reporting on the progress of the education project to key groups such as the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Board.

Accountable for strategic planning and delivering projects against set objectives, within agreed timeframes, and achieving quality outcomes

Interpret data from various sources, including national guidance, to inform the development of education projects, Identify accurate and reliable evidence relevant to the education project from a large amount of complex information available from sources such as the academic literature and NHS information systems.

Contribute to the development of key performance indicators for education projects/programme.

The post holder will support effective short and long-term AHP workforce planning through timely access to accurate AHP workforce supply and demand data and intelligence.

Present AHP workforce data to inform strategic planning and associated action plans.

Work collaboratively with finance and service planning colleagues to gather AHP workforce data.

Be responsible for the interpretation of data from various sources, including national guidance, to inform development change models.

The post holder will develop key working relationships with AHP managers to understand service needs.

The post holder will lead on the development and promotion AHP workforce supply and demand at local and regional level.

Map current provision of the AHP workforce at THHFT.

Work in partnerships with AHP Faculties and Councils at system and regional level.

Devise a project plan with clear objectives and time frames to deliver key aspects of the AHP Workforce Strategy focussing on the recruitment, retention and development of the AHP workforce.

Make recommendations regarding the sustainably of AHP developments and programme of work in THHFT.

Work in collaboration with the AHP Regional Lead to support regional and national objectives.

Achieve outcomes which will be aggregated at system, regional and national level to address workforce shortfall and build sustainable AHP workforce supply in the future.
