Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join our screening team and be responsible for supporting the fetal medicine aspect of the service.

You will be working closely with our Fetal medicine consultants and the screening team, providing a level of continuity of care in conjunction with the obstetric team. This role is hospital based.

The post holder will be responsible for providing and co-ordinating the care of women who screen positive for chromosome abnormalities and fetal abnormalities within the fetal anomaly screening programme (FASP) and where the risk for fetal abnormalities is increased due to ultrasound findings, maternal infection, genetic risk or previous incidence of abnormality.

Main duties of the job

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To promote midwifery practice and developments within the clinical care settings and enhance the service offered to women and their families in line with best practice and national standards
  • To counsel and provide support and information to parents of the unborn fetus with a suspected abnormality, including links with relevant support organisations where appropriate. She/he will provide a link between the woman, maternity services and specialist Fetal Medicine Unit services.
  • To work closely with the Fetal Medicine Consultants and team and provide assistance with clinical procedures where appropriate.
  • To participate when required in information giving and counselling women and their partners in the antenatal period regarding fetal abnormality, and advice on services available and treatment options
  • To liaise with the multidisciplinary team and external specialist team where required to coordinate care for women with on-going pregnancies affected by fetal abnormalities, ensuring appropriate care plans are in place for the birth and neonatal follow up
  • To co-ordinate the care of pregnant women diagnosed with fetal abnormalities

  • 31 bedded ward for inpatient antenatal and postnatal mothers and babies
  • An innovational and dedicated 4 bedded ward for the management of early pregnancy loss.
