Job summary

We are looking for a chemotherapy certified registered Nurse who is compassionate, accountable and has extensive experience and skills to facilitate care in our proposed oncology assessment day unit. We are looking for a Registered Nurse who is motivated, passionate and committed to providing excellent patient experience and excellent care.

It is an exciting opportunity for the post-holder to work alongside our clinical nurse specialists and medical team for acute oncology to develop a day service for oncology patients to bypass A&E department and be promptly treated in the acute oncology assessment unit and thus improving patient experience. Initially this service will run 08:00 - 16:00 with flexibility depending on the evolving needs of the service. This unit will be comprised of two couches and the oncology assessment unit is embedded within the oncology ward.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide direct, specialised care and advice to patients admitted to the oncology assessment unit (OAU), using specialist nursing skills to assess each patient and ensuring that care and support to patients is individualised to their needs.

To act as a patients' advocate and to give advice regarding treatment options in order that patients can give informed consent.

To work in collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team including emergency care practitioners, general physicians and surgeons, haematologists/oncologists, specialist nurses, AHPs and support services in order to ensure the provision of a high-quality service for patient.

To ensure patients are seen within 30 minutes of arriving within the unit, interpret, analyse and respond to test results whilst ensuring patient's safety.

To undertake a nursing assessment of the unwell patient with a cancer complication as outlined in the service operating inclusion criteria and ensure they are managed within agreed protocols/pathways.

To support a plan of care for patients who attend the oncology assessment unit.

To liaise with the clinical site management team if patients require admission.To work in the chemotherapy day unit if no admissions to the oncology assessment unit.
