We are currently recruiting for the role of Lead Midwife for Education and Workforce which is a post that is full of opportunity to support the development and wellbeing of a wonderful team within our maternity department.

The postholder will be responsible for overseeing pre and post registration education, all aspects of education governance plus recruitment and retention.

Main duties of the job

The role of Lead Midwife for Education and Workforce is an exciting opportunity for any midwives who have a good level of experience working within Education and training and who either have leadership experience or are looking to move into a leadership role.

The post will include managing a team who are responsible for supporting all educational activities (pre and post reg), recruitment and quality assurance. The team will have a strong focus on wellbeing and development with the aim of improving retention and ensuring a well-educated workforce who are capable of providing a high standard of safe and individualized care to all people that we care for.

You will need to have a good knowledge of all current issues in education, training and a good understanding of some of the current challenges within the maternity workforce.

The postholder will require a good understanding of the requirements of the Ockenden report as it will be central to the role, working as part of the team who will be implementing the 15 essential actions.

Education and Training Pre-registration Training

  • Lead, promote, and facilitate a safe and positive learning environment for student midwives.
  • In partnership with the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs):
    • Co-ordinate and facilitate the educational activities of all pre- registration midwives
    • Promote evidenced based learning in the development of midwifery practice and ensure all Trust based teaching reflects current curriculum content and structure.
    • Manage cases of failing students in collaboration with the University to provide the best opportunity for improvement and success
  • Work effectively in partnership with the HEIs to manage student placement mapping, ensuring an individualized approach to enable all students to meet their course and EU requirements
  • Work collaboratively with Health Education England (HEE) regarding placement expansion and placement assurance
  • Create practice-based opportunities for learning to reinforce the classroom based theory so that students achieve the NMC requirements to complete the midwifery course, and trouble shoot and escalate where appropriate.
  • Ensure support for students in practice by the provision of continuing professional development of Practice Assessors and Supervisors. Oversee annual update for all midwives
  • Determine the optimal ratios of assessors in practice for student midwife and develop a strategy to meet and maintain this objective.
  • Prioritise wellbeing of students and provide pastoral care to all students both in maternity or wider experience settings. Escalate concerns to appropriate HEIs where appropriate.
  • Liaise with Nursing education and clinical teams to provide a comprehensive programme of wider experience placements
  • Work proactively towards reducing student attrition by meeting the needs of individual students and engaging with any HEI, sector or national initiatives focused on that aim.
  • Line manage Clinical Placement Facilitator/Practice Educator midwives and support them in their roles
  • Keep abreast of current issues in Midwifery training such as changes to curriculum or assessment process
  • Support, and be involved, in the selection and recruitment process for student midwives.

Post-registration Training and Education
  • In collaboration with the senior management and Risk team, plan the annual maternity mandatory training programme which reflects current education requirements and incorporates learning from local clinical incidents and thematic reviews. Adjustments to the programme should be made throughout the year as required.
  • Oversee planning and delivery of the training programme including dates, training spaces, equipment, facilitators and attendance
  • Organise and chair meeting of the PROMPT Faculty, the purpose of which is to:
    • Annually review the content of the training and amend and update as indicated
    • Ensure sufficient dates and suitably trained facilitators are available to provide the planned training programme
  • Facilitate allocation of all Continuing Professional Development courses in a transparent and equitable way and liaise with the Trust Education Lead to process applications in a timely manner
  • Ensure a programme of In-situ simulations (ISS) is planned in wide variety of settings and including the multi-professional team. ISSs should be based on learning from incidents and thematic reviews.

Practice Development
  • Oversee delivery of the annual training programme for post-registration midwives
  • Oversee delivery of Preceptorship programme working within the Capital Midwife framework and in collaboration with the Trust Preceptorship Lead and matrons for each clinical area
  • Liaise with PDMs and Matrons in planning Preceptorship Placement rotation
  • Liaise with Trust education leads and matrons to ensure sufficient opportunity for teaching and training for any midwives undertaking CPD courses
  • Make collaborative decisions about offering Return to Practice (RtP) placements
  • Oversee support and assessment for any RtP or overseas midwives in placement
Education Governance
  • Ensure quality assurance and monitoring processes are in place for practice learning and are maintained by co-ordinating the completion of all necessary audits, reviews and reports.
  • Ensure compliance of all training targets and report data at a Departmental, Trust and Sector level
  • Ensure training database is accurate and regularly updated to demonstrate training compliance in line with National training standards, Trust, Ockenden and CNST requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with the Governance and Risk teams to share learning from clinical incidents and events.
  • Lead new developments and initiatives to promote opportunities for inter-professional learning in the practice setting.
Workforce Recruitment
  • Oversee and work collaboratively with managers and the team responsible for the recruitment and selection of all newly qualified or experienced Band 6 midwives or maternity support workers. Ensure fair and transparent processes are used at all times according to the Trusts recruitment and EDI policies
  • Liaise and assist with the recruitment of any specialist or senior posts within the department
  • Monitor all Job Descriptions and adverts to ensure that they are accurate, up to date and contain appropriate language
  • Monitor vacancy rates in all areas and produce reports as required to update on current recruitment activities and the recruitment pipeline
  • Write Job Descriptions for any new posts in collaboration with other managers and the HR team to ensure consistency with similar posts in other departments or Trusts.
Retention
  • Devise a strategy to implement the NHS People Plan to support the development of staff in the maternity unit.
  • Oversee the work of the Recruitment and Retention midwife
  • Implement, oversee or collaborate on any new initiatives designed to support midwifery or student midwifery retention
  • Work collaboratively with the PMA team to support any staff involved in clinical incidents
  • Be prepared to innovate and incorporate new models of working such as flexible working, and staff development initiatives eg. Shadowing, rotation, secondments etc..

General
  • Ensure local and national service objectives are included in the maternity unit education strategy
