An exciting opportunity to join our busy General & Emergency Surgery department at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) has arisen following a recent expansion to our General Surgery services. We are recruiting for a Full Time Consultant General Surgeon (10 PA's). The post holder will need to have wide experience of all aspects of emergency general surgery care. An interest in Elective gastrointestinal surgery, either upper or lower, would also be desirable.

Although the role is based at our NMUH site, the successful candidate may be required to attend any one of our Trust sites or other hospital links to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Grade in General Surgery will work closely with the Service Management team, Clinical Lead and Clinical Directors, as well as the Divisional General Managers (GM) and Associate Directors of Nursing & AHP's in triumvirate management structures. The role is expected to take an accountability for the service, including the delivery of agreed local and national quality and performance standards within budgetary and resource availability.

The post holder will also have responsibility for the strategic development of clinical services within all General Surgery services, and with colleagues, the delivery of that strategy. The successful candidate will ensure that services adopt a continuous improvement approach together with the other members of the triumvirates, and will provide clinical leadership to General Surgery services, ensuring that all clinical staff are aligned with the Division's and Trust's objectives and are working in effective multidisciplinary /multi professional teams.

Job responsibilities

The post herald a change in the General Surgery department. There will be 11 Consultant and General Surgeons and 1 Clinical Specialist, all taking an equal part in a 1 in 12 on-call commitment. In addition, in keeping with London standards and the principle of continuity of care, all patients will be seen by a consultant every weekday. Four of those posts will be colorectal cancer posts and the other 8 will be General Surgery posts, where the successful candidates will be able to develop an interest, such as benign colorectal surgery, laparoscopic or benign upper Gastro-intestinal surgery. The general workload covers broad general surgical, colorectal, breast and benign upper GI disorders.

An indicative job plan for this post is provided below which will normally be re-assessed after 3 months of appointment to ensure it meets the needs of the service. The job plan is designed to have a balance of emergency and elective work.

The post holder will also have responsibility for the strategic development of clinical services within all General Surgery services, and with colleagues, the delivery of that strategy.   • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights) or eligible within 6 months.

Desirable

  • Appropriate Higher degree

Relevant Experience

  • Experienced in emergency general laparoscopic surgery, including hot gallbladder surgery and colorectal Surgery
  • If a subspecialty interest is declared then the applicant is expected to meet the CCT requirements for that specialty
