Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to work within the Enfield Community Respiratory Team as a Respiratory Assistant on a 6 month fixed term with a likelihood to extend the contract. We are a multidisciplinary team who provide support and self management advice to patients in Enfield who have chronic lung disease such as COPD.

Your role will be supporting our respiratory physiotherapists in delivery and development of our pulmonary rehabilitation service. You will also work with patients on a one to one basis giving advice about breathlessness management and chest clearance under the guidance of the qualified staff.

You must have a full driving license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Main duties of the job

  1. To perform home visits unsupervised to continue ongoing treatment programs as prescribed by a qualified member of staff following care plans. Access to advice and support from a senior physiotherapist/nurse is available as required, either directly or by phone. Clinical work is routinely monitored.
  2. To perform basic respiratory assessment of delegated patients. To assist the respiratory physiotherapist with running the pulmonary rehabilitation and assisting the respiratory team to provide the best evidence-based care to the patients in the community.
  3. To contribute to the delivery of health promotion activities within the service and in accordance with Trust objectives.
  4. To undertake administrative, clerical and other duties that support the effective delivery of the physiotherapy service to patients.
  5. To undertake assessments for home equipment as a trusted assessor.

To assist with performing initial assessments including shuttle walk test/six-minute walk test or any other exercise tolerance tests as appropriate in the community and patients home.

To assist the patients to complete outcome measures pre and post course, recording observations and maintaining and updating the database.

To be able to do warm up and cool down exercises and demonstrate the pulmonary rehabilitation exercises to patients alongside respiratory physiotherapist.

To maintain stock of all respiratory equipment alongside following appropriate policies in ordering equipment (mobility aids, nebulisers)

To be able to continue the exercise/respiratory program prescribed by the respiratory physiotherapist at the patients home and follow-up classes in the community setting.

To assist the respiratory physiotherapist to organize and deliver the educational component of pulmonary rehabilitation involving the multi-disciplinary team.

To assist the wider respiratory team in delivering patient centered care in clinic or at the patients home.

To assess and where appropriate order equipment to assist the patient to carry out activities of daily living to maintain independence.

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients and carers to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating. For example patients may be dysphasic, deaf or blind, or who may be unable to accept diagnosis.
