Job summary

To work towards gaining proficiency standards for entry to the NMC register/recordable for Specialist Community Practitioners (District Nurses) and Nurse Independent/Supplementary Prescriber.

The Trust will provide the Specialist Community Practitioner District Nursing Student with a learning environment enabling the student to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to become a qualified Specialist Community Practitioner within a defined pathway.

To gain the knowledge, skills and competencies required to exercise higher levels of judgment, discretion and decision-making in clinical care focusing on four broad areas:

  • Clinical Care
  • Leadership and Management
  • Facilitation of Learning
  • Evidence Research and Development

The Specialist Community Practitioner Sponsorship Student post is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification and a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Main duties of the job

The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as an NMC registered Specialist Community Nurse on a defined pathway. These are summarised below:

  • To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Practitioner programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with university regulations.
  • To work with the Specialist Community Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice (District Nursing).
  • With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines of the chosen pathway.
  • To develop/build skills in Caseload management, Leadership and Team Management.
  • To work within University Regulations regarding academic work and student conduct.
  • To work within employing organisation policies pertaining to the relevant clinical setting.
  • To work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.

About us

The Enfield Community District Nursing Service comprise nurses with a wide range of clinical skills and knowledge. They are led by six specialist district nurses who are registered nurses with additional specialisttraining and qualifications.

The teams comprise specialist district nurses, caseload managers, staff nurses and health care assistants. There are six daytime district nursing teams, one twilight/late team and one night team.

A community nurse-led clinic runs four days a week and provides skilled assessments and treatments. District nurses work closely with General Practitioners, other professionals, and voluntary agencies in the community. Their role is to support, educate and encourage self-care and independence in the community.

Who can benefit from the service?

District nurses provide expert nursing care to patients over the age of 16 living in their own homes and residential homes who cannot get to their surgery for treatment. They provide support and care for patients with health needs in the community who are unwell and recovering at home and or at the end of life. They will respond when specific expert health interventions are needed, e.g. with short-term health issues or sudden health crises, when patients are discharged from the hospital, or have a sudden deterioration in a health condition. They provides interventions within the home, including chemotherapy disconnection and intravenous therapy, palliative and end-of-life care.
