Job summary

Will need significant scrubbing experience and will be expected to work in all elective surgical specialties and also emergency and trauma surgery. With specific responsibility for Opthalmic theatre and surgery.

Deputize for senior staff and co-ordinate clinical, managerial and education requirements of the area and team they are working with. Work with the senior management team to ensure delivery of high quality care and ensure efficiency.

Provide advise support and training to junior staff supporting both elective and emergency surgery pathway.

The post holder may be required to support ITU/HDU with training and support when needed, especially during peak covid related admissions.

Main duties of the job

  • Work as scrub nurse looking after all surgical specialties including emergency and trauma patients.
  • Overall responsibility for opthalmic surgery and theatre.
  • Participate in shift pattern including weekdays, weekends and nights. Work flexibly to meet needs of the patient and department.
  • Work with nursing, ODP and medical colleagues to provide a safe environment for the patient undergoing day surgery procedures, including checking and maintenance of equipment.
  • proactively check booked cases and ensure trays and equipment available as required.
  • Teach and support junior staff to meet competencies and work in line with clinical guidelines and AFPP recommendations.
  • Utilise resources appropriately to ensure agreed standard of patient care
  • Participate in the development of local nursing / theatre policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the multi-disciplinary decision making process regarding changes in patient care and order of operating lists.
  • Ensure patient care is documented appropriately and that all electronic records are maintained and accurate.
  • Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required.
  • Work closely with day surgery and recovery staff, supporting as required to ensure smooth pathway for patients.

About us

The department consists of seven operating theatres undertaking general, orthopaedic, colorectal, gynaecological, breast, urology and ophthalmic surgery, for both patients undergoing day surgery and patients requiring inpatient stay.

These are supported by a pre assessment suite, day surgery suite with minor ops theatre and recovery suite.

It is a very friendly, busy hospital serving a very diverse highly populated area.
