Job summary

This role is central to the RNOH strategy, leading transformation across theatres and perioperative care to ensure high-quality, effective and efficient services that uphold the Trust's position as a leading orthopaedic centre.

The Director of Clinical Services will provide strong clinical and operational leadership, driving continuous improvement in processes, ways of working and care delivery.

The post holder will ensure world-class, patient-centred and evidence-based care delivered by a skilled and compassionate workforce. They will give senior nursing and clinical leadership to theatres, recovery, TSSU and pre-operative assessment, reporting to the Divisional Director and professionally accountable to the Chief Nurse.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Be responsible for the provision of strong clinical and operational leadership and oversight throughout theatres and perioperative services, to ensure the best experience and outcomes for patients, demonstrating accountability for the delivery of high quality, safe and effective services.

Provide clinical leadership and management oversight to ensure that the appropriate operating policies, structures and processes are developed, disseminated and adhered to in order to ensure effective planning and execution of theatre lists and deployment of staff and resources to ensure safe, efficient running of theatres, and maximise efficiency and utilisation.

Build effective relationships with surgical teams and all theatre users, to understand and plan for the needs of each speciality, establish clear channels of communication and feedback, and ensure operating policies are followed.

Performance and Operational Management

1. Be responsible for the effective performance of clinical services against agreed KPIs and service standards. Develop and implement recovery and improvement plans as required

2. Work alongside and influence key Trust stakeholders to ensure that perioperative services deliver its strategic objectives.

Workforce and Education

1. Work in conjunction with the Corporate Nursing/Education and Learning and Development to develop and maintain clinical learning environments that are fit for purpose, in line with quality assurance guidelines and other external regulatory bodies and ensure the Trust meets its responsibilities to provide clinical experience and mentor support for pre-registration for nurses/ODPs, and high-quality preceptorship across all areas.

2. Provide professional leadership for nursing and ODP recruitment and retention across services and work with other senior nurses and HR colleagues to develop innovative recruitment and retention approaches and support the introduction of new ways of working.
