Locum Consultant Anaesthetist/Specialist interest in Periop Medicine

Job summary

Applications are invited for a 12-month post of Locum Consultant in Anaesthesia with a special interest in Perioperative medicine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH).

10 Programmed Activities will be offered - 9 Direct Clinical Care (which includes 0.5 PA for on call) and 1 Supporting Professional Activities.

The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 6 months of service. Initial job plan will include sessions within all major units at the RNOH including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit, joint replacement unit, spinal unit, shoulder unit, foot & ankle unit, and anaesthetic pre-assessment clinic. Candidates must be able to demonstrate clinical experience at either fellowship or consultant level for perioperative medicine, including anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic and complex spinal deformity surgery.

Job plans may be changed to accommodate where possible the specific requests of the candidate and the needs of the department.

Currently the Trust permits flexibility in time and space to accommodate SPAs.

Main duties of the job

to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of anaesthesia and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to providing anaesthesia services.

actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the anaesthetic department meetings, MDT and regular morning meetings. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate.

engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.

The postholder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to the commencement date of the appointment.

The job plan shall be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.

It shall also include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

  • FRCA or GMC recognised equivalent qualification
  • CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent training
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Registrar with CCT in anaesthesia or equivalent or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview

  • Full GMC registration
