Job summary
The individual must have completed the care certificate and be working toward or possess NVQ Level 3 in health care or Diploma in health and Social Care level 2/3 or Apprenticeship in health and Social Care level 2/3 and hold a full U.K manual driving license.
The individual must have experience in rehabilitation or caring for spinal cord injured/physically disabled patients or equivalent relevant experience.
To be successful the candidate will work on the ward, assisting patients with all activities of daily living as well as accompanying patients in therapy.
In addition excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as is an understanding of the physical and psychological impact of a spinal cord injury on the patients and their families.
The successful candidate will be physically fit, (due to the heavy manual and handling requirements), able to work autonomously and effectively as part of a team. The ability to learn and develop new skills is paramount to this role in order to maximise the patient's potential.
Main duties of the job
Actively work with spinal cord injury patients with a variety of dependency levels including ventilator dependent patients, participating in their rehabilitation reintegration and education programs.
Provide care and assistance to SCI patients in a variety of settings.
Participate in all elements of nursing care deemed competent/qualified to perform. This will include invasive procedures such as bladder, bowel and respiratory management.
Work independently with patients regularly under discreet supervision, reporting back patient progress and informing the qualified nurses/ therapist of any problems.
Liaise with SCIC MDT regarding social reintegration and hospital/community based rehabilitation. Assist patients to participate in regular therapeutic group activities
Hold a current full UK manual Driving license.
Enable patients to maintain and improve their independence by fitting prescribed equipment. E.g splints or body braces. Handle and move patients, as indicated, by using prescribed equipment and techniques as detailed in training and be familiar with, and utilise, the services and advice given by the handling advisor, including stretches, proning, orthoses etc
Follow therapist's treatment plans which may involve transferring and mobilising patients using moderate to high physical effort or lifting and handling equipment.
Promote and encourage social reintegration for patients under the care of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre team.
