Job summary

RNOH invites applications for Engineering Fellows with orthopaedic implant research expertise. The RNOH is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK and a world leader in the musculoskeletal discipline.

The post holder will manage research projects at the Implant Science Centre. This post will have a focus on implant analysis projects utilising advanced imaging-metrology methods, including micro-CT imaging, laser scanning, optical profilometry and scanning electron microscopy.

The post holder will deliver research on Implant Science that will generate tertiary referrals ofpatients to the RNOH over the long term and reinforce the RNOH as a research and teaching

hospital. At least 3-5 peer-reviewed journal papers will be published for each year of the post.

The post holder will have a strong mathematical and/or engineering background, and will beexperienced in metrology imaging, medical physics, mechanical, material or biomedical engineering,with knowledge of the use of micro-CT analysis, laser scanning and similar imaging-metrologymethods. He/she will have an excellent knowledge of implant imaging and analysis, as well asthe functional, clinical issues and performance requirements of orthopaedic implants. He/she willhave a proven ability to design and implement research studies and will lead the developmentand optimisation of analysis methods by working with other engineers and computer scientists, andin collaboration with imaging scientists for pre-revision imaging

The post-holder will:

1. Develop and execute implant analysis strategies for regulators and post-market surveillance.

2. Operate metrology equipment, manage data analysis and communicate results to relevant personnel.

3. Operate imaging-metrology based analysis tools and software.

4. Combine metrology co-registration from implants retrieved from patient following revision, with prerevision

patient medical imaging in collaboration with the RNOH imaging science centre.

5. Direct and facilitate the testing of new products to verify product reliability.

6. Lead the development of technical protocols and reports. Improve/support existing processes.

7. Generate prospective publication strategies and research plans in support of implant science.

8. Prepare and present complex scientific papers to large groups at national and international

conferences and to peer reviewed journals.

9. Potential supervisory responsibilities of interns or R&D technicians on departmental projects.

10. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members.

11. Represent Department on project teams.

12. Coordinate with internal and external collaborators to bring state-of-the-art research solutions to

implant analysis applications.

13. Keep abreast of relevant developments and new techniques, maintaining a detailed awareness of

current topics important to this field.
