Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for either an ST3+ trainee in surgery or anaesthetics to take a year's out of programme experience (OOPE) or for a post-CCT/Trust employed surgical/anaesthetics doctor to be part of a national pilot, taking up a GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) Fellow post for 12 months. The job role will include involvement in projects at a strategic level as well as operationally within the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore (RNOH). There is also an opportunity to partner with industry/academic schemes for the right candidate - opportunities will be discussed at interview.

The GIRFT Fellow will work with senior colleagues across the RNOH and GIRFT, to assist in data gathering and analysis of national and local practice and current outcomes; drawing up best guidance practice following clinical engagement across Trusts nationally and within the RNOH; publishing and disseminating best practice following implementation.

Main duties of the job

Supervised by a Surgical Consultant, your duties will be split as follows:

(a) 32 hours a week as a GIRFT fellow, focussing on areas of work such as:

  • Development of surgical pathways for High Volume Low Complexity procedures (HVLC)
  • Junior doctor engagement in HVLC work including identifying training opportunities
  • Maximising productivity and training during Better Training Better Care lists
  • Role of simulation & human factors training in improving theatre productivity

(b) 16 hours a week clinical work, including on-call duties.

Training will be provided as required and fellows will be supported by regular access to senior clinicians including Professor Tim Briggs, National Director of Clinical Improvement. The post forms part of a cohort of Fellows and there will be collaboration with other national fellowship programmes e.g. the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellows Scheme and the Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellows Scheme.

Fellows will be offered support with research publications and regular development opportunities including action learning sets, leadership, service improvement and the GIRFT Metholodogy.
