Clinical Teaching Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical teaching fellow. This role is a full time, 40 hours per week fixed term for one year commencing April 2026 to March 2027. Educational leads and clinical teams will determine an exact timetable of duties.

The Royal Free Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises the Royal Free, Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals. The Royal Free Hospital forms one of the three core UCL Medical School Campuses, with up to 250 undergraduate medical students on site at any one time.

Undergraduate education forms an important feature of this post, with Endocrinology being a 6-12 weekly placement for approximately 6 Year 4 (first clinical year) students although this schedule is subject to changes as regulated by the Medical School. The Diabetes/Endocrinology teaching is predominantly based at the Royal Free Hospital, The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the Clinical activity at the Royal Free site. Endocrinology teaching has recently moved from Module C to Module A and is currently within a hybrid timetable with acute medicine where students will have days and weeks on and off acute medicine.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):o Plan and deliver aspects of Diabetes/Endocrine teaching to studentso Facilitate mock examination stations for the studentso Setting up new student initiatives as demand and capacity warrant with a focus on enhancing inpatient and outpatient delivery of specialist teaching.o Delivery of substantive student examinations and OSCEs across all year groups and hospital siteso To play an active role in the delivery of high quality undergraduate medical student teaching, including cross cover for peers and assistance on other projects on a flexible basiso Troubleshooting of areas identified in student feedback to ensure optimal quality of the education deliveredo To evaluate aspects of the course and curricular deliveryo Local networking in order to exchange and share ideas and practice among peerso To help ensure the sustainability of changes beyond the duration of this posto Clinical responsibilities depending on experience level of candidate include out-patient and day ward opportunities with enhancement of skills and developing competency.o Participation on call acute medicine rota at Royal Free hospital to increase clinical exposure and development of competencies.

The post holder will join a growing and thriving community of education fellows across all Trust sites. This team forms an essential part of the delivery of the high quality student teaching for which UCL is renowned, and also provides a community with valuable peer support.Fellows all have their own specialities and projects but also hold shared responsibilities as detailed below. These may apply to all modules, all year groups and across all sites, and therefore this may include cross-site working over and above that specified here. The post holder would be expected to be flexible in this regard and must be a good team player able to share responsibilities with colleagues.

The role is co-sponsored by Diabetes/Endocrinology and help will be provided at the highest level to support you in your role and providing the Diabetes/Endocrinology curriculum to students. The Diabetes/Endocrine Undergraduate Lead will provide supervision.Further support and oversight of the shared educational responsibilities is provided by Dr Paul Dilworth, UCLMS Site Sub Dean. Furthermore, there is an active community of clinical education fellows at both sites and there will be peer support and cross-cover available. There are also friendly and knowledgeable teams in the education centre at Barnet hospital and the UCL Campus at the Royal Free Hospital.

Personal development

The post holder will be invited to participate in a UCL training to teach course and will be encouraged to study for a Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education. The post holder will be supported to build their portfolio to assist in gaining accreditation through the Higher Education Academy prior to completing their post.There will be a wealth of other opportunities for personal and educational development during this post and the candidate will be encouraged and supported to pursue their interests in this regard.
