Locum Consultant Urology (Kidney Cancer Surgeon)

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12-month locum consultant position within the kidney cancer service at the Royal Free Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to undertake open, laparoscopic and robotic upper urinary tract surgery for all aspects of both benign and cancer diseases. The Royal Free is also one of the few centres to perform in addition to routine upper tract robotic surgery, robotic caval thrombectomy, renal transplant and ureterolysis. The appointee will participate in the upper-tract consultant on-call rota.

You will be joining an innovative department with excellent opportunities for both clinical/surgical experience, research and for continuing education.

The Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer is located at the Royal Free Hospital and is also associated with University College London Partners (UCL Partners) with a good infrastructure for research and has multiple links to leading research departments, including the Sanger and the Crick Institute.

Essential

  • Possession of MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligible for GMC registration
  • Eligible for admission to the specialist register in Urology
  • Membership of relevant Royal College or equivalent
  • FRCS(Urol) or equivalent

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Subspecialist expertise in renal surgery, including open radical nephrectomy, open partial nephrectomy, robotic assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy, conventional laparoscopic renal surgery
  • Experience in multidisciplinary cancer care
  • Track record in conducting prospective audit and utilising the results to inform service development
  • Strong teaching skills and experience
  • Ability to supervise the clinical work of other staff
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to be personally accountable for actions
  • Authority and decision-making skills needed to lead a multidisciplinary team in a complex environment
