Diabetic Eye Screening Programme Screener/Grader

Job summary

To run retinal screening clinics for patients with diabetes in North Central London (NCL) and that they receive a high quality systematic screening, grading.

Patients will range from those with learning difficulties and dementia to those who are highly informed of their medical condition, from young persons in their early teens to patients in late old age, from those who are highly articulate to those who have little ability to conduct a conversation in English. All patients must be dealt with in the same professional manner.

As this programme is multi-centered, the post holder will support the programme in various settings, therefore travel will be involved. Grading takes place at the North Middlesex site. The post holder will also be expected to work at out of hours clinics (evenings and Saturdays).

This is a 12 month fix term Maternity Cover.

About us

NHS England commissions RFL - North Middlesex Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide eye screening to more than 100,000 patients with diabetes across North Central London. The service covers five boroughs: Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington.

Our screening clinics are operated from eight hospital and community sites across the sector, with our administration, management and grading centre based at the North Middlesex Hospital.

The screening programme office has close links with other services on the diabetes pathway and aims to provide an integrated, patient focused service of the highest quality.

Job responsibilities

To provide diabetic eye screening on completion of induction, training and competency accreditation in accordance with national guidelines.

This includes:

Taking and recording diabetic and eye related medical history.

Assessing and recording patients visual acuity.

Instilling eye drops as prescribed.

Provide patients with both written and verbal information about diabetic eye disease.

To Perform fundus photography using a digital imaging system and triage images in an appropriate manner

To hold the C&G or HSD Level 3 Qualification in Diabetic Eye Screening/ Grading or to work towards its completion.

To undertake primary grading of images once necessary number of satisfactory supervised grades have been completed and specialist Units of Level 3 Health Screening Diploma (Diabetic Eye) has been achieved.

To undertake secondary grading of images once approved by the Screening Manager and the Clinical Lead, to ensure that the agreed grading targets are met. These qualitative and quantitative targets will be agreed by the Screening Manager and the Clinical Lead.

To participate in inter-grader agreement reviews with the Clinical Lead.

To undertake all Trust Mandatory Training.

To aim for and complete minimum of 10 Test & Training sets per year to an agreed standard.

To run Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Clinics by taking OCT images and photographs when needed.
