Band 3 Phlebotomy and Cannulation Technician

Job summary

The successful candidates will maintain a high standard of phlebotomy practice that is focused on patient care and safety. You will be required to work as part of a team delivering excellent phlebotomy and cannulation service on our wards and clinics and obtain quality blood specimens for testing by the Pathology laboratory.

You will be expected to work closely with members of the medical and nursing staff as well as with our patients. You must demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work autonomously while prioritising workloads.

Main duties of the job

  • Take quality blood specimens for analysis using evacuated collectiontechniques.
  • Cannulate and take blood from inpatients and out patients effectively.
  • Promote the principles of best practice and act as a role model forothers.
  • Respond to all bleeps for the cannulation service in a timely manner.
  • Complete all cannulation documentation as required.
  • Input cannulation documentation into iView.
  • Ensure personal compliance with all relevant local, Trust, statutorysafety, other policies and procedures. Understanding and adherence tothe Health and Safety Work act.
  • Rigorously adhere to all departmental and Trust wide infection control policies.
  • Record and maintain daily activity audits
  • Assist and participate where necessary in the development ofphlebotomy/cannulation based training/education programmes.
  • Participate in the induction of new staff and work alongside trainees to provide support and as a tutor/mentor.
  • Document all errors and/or incidents affecting patient care.
  • Report and assist in the investigation and resolution of complaints within area of responsibility ensuring lessons learnt are implemented.
  • Clean equipment and work area to Trust wide standards.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate levels of stock on a daily basis,highlighting to supervisor if stocks are low.
