Job summary
This post is for a Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon with subspeciality interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Cataract Surgery. The successful candidate will join an existing team of 4 Consultants run the Paediatric and Strabismus service.
This is a well-established post and in addition to their clinical and surgical responsibilities, the successful applicant will support with the developments in the service. The post holder will be responsible for ROP screening at the trust.
The candidate will be expected to actively participate in teaching, training and audit.
Main duties of the job
Provide senior clinician services to respective firms as per the indicative job plan or as agreed with the Trust.
There are no on call commitments applicable to this post.
Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of Trust's resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department including the development of quality enhancement projects in the unit.
Provide senior clinician services to areas of special interest as per the indicative job plan or as agreed with the Trust. For a consultant ophthalmologist, this will include providing ophthalmic services and working with colleagues to ensure the most efficient use of resources.
Show flexibility and undertake different appropriate clinical tasks within the allocated DCC sessions at the request of the clinical lead, as the need arises.
Actively participate in the unit's Teaching Programme and undertake supervision, teaching and training of medical trainees and other multi-professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies.
Actively participate in clinical guidelines development, audit and CPD.
About us
The job plan will be formally agreed following appointment. A sample timetable is included below to demonstrate the allocation of PAs. The individual job plan will be reviewed and agreed annually. The timetable has no on-call rota.
The department is committed to providing a strong training culture. Junior doctors rotate as a part of North London Deanery training program through a firm-based timetable, August to August. There are regular Consultant led lunch time teaching on Monday and Friday afternoons.
The successful candidate will be supported in the continued provision of their sub-specialty service. He/she will have a continuing responsibility for care under their scope of responsibility and work closely with consultant colleagues for the proper functioning of the department.
