Clinical Fellow in Infection/ Medical Microbiology

The opportunity for a clinical fellowship in Infection/Medical Microbiology with a special interest in Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) has arisen, based at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. The post is for a period of 6 months, commencing September 2025, part-time at 60% (3 days per week or 60% equivalent). This would be an ideal opportunity to acquire experience for those interested in a career in infection prior to specialization. This post does not have Royal College of Postgraduate approval for training; however, the trainee will be trained alongside deanery appointed registrars, foundation year doctors and medical students. There are excellent opportunities for gaining experience in clinical infection management, auditing, quality improvement projects, and academic publications.

The main duties of the job will be to provide clinical microbiology/infection services to North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, and to support AMS practice and auditing at the NMUH site.

  1. Support the liaison Infection and Microbiology Service: - Reviewing patients identified with sepsis/ reviewing patients with complex infections in the hospital, supporting the Infection registrar in their daily jobs, particularly in the absence of the Microbiology SHO.

About us

The microbiology department works closely with all infection specialties and others to deliver an infection service that is in line with the needs of our patients.

We have close collaborations with Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Virology colleagues across North Central London.

We are an established postgraduate clinical training site in North London for trainees specializing in Core Infection Training / Specialist Infection Training / HIV. Two deanery appointed Core Infection registrars rotate on a six-monthly basis through our service and participate in the Microbiology on-call. We also have a dedicated microbiology F2 working with us on a four-month rotational basis.

The successful candidate will work directly under the supervision of an Infection Consultant, and alongside the Infection SpR in training.

The priority of this post is to support Antimicrobial Stewardship. Attention to detail, good communication, and well as excellent clinical documentation and organizational skills are required. You will be expected to contribute to clinical audit, guideline development, and quality improvement projects.

The job demands a high-level of flexibility, initiative, multi-tasking, and independent working. The daily tasks can change rapidly, reactive to the evolving situation within the hospital.

Teaching

The North Middlesex University Hospital has gained a reputation for teaching excellence in the region due to our dedicated consultant teachers and a rich variety of clinical cases. The department offers extensive learning opportunities. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in departmental teaching.

Protected training sessions are provided to the appropriate goals of training agreed by the educational supervisors. Study leave will be granted, subject to approval by ES in accordance with the Trust policy. Candidates will be supported towards gaining relevant post-graduate qualifications, and will also be encouraged and supported by consultants to present and publish

The hospital has a modern, well-equipped Academic Centre for Post-Graduate Medical Education (PGME) with a comprehensive medical library and an adjacent Open Learning Centre. The Academic Centre is well used by the Hospital staff and local General Practitioners and offers an intensive programe of postgraduate lectures and demonstrations. The Hospital has an excellent reputation for its postgraduate medical education. There are regular FRCS, MRCP, DCH and MRCOG courses held and on-going MRCP training.
