Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology

Job summary

The Barnet and Chase Farm Gastroenterology Department provides a comprehensive luminal GI service to a large catchment area. There are currently 10 NHS gastroenterologists and 12 nurse specialists based across Barnet and Chase Farm sites. Trainee support includes 3 Registrars, 2 FY2 & 1 FY1.

The post includes supporting outpatient clinics and covering endoscopy sessions across Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals as well as covering the gastroenterology inpatient rota. A new £2 million unit for endoscopy patients has opened at Chase Farm Hospital. The new unit has twice as many treatment rooms as were previously provided, as well as private recovery room which means more privacy and dignity for patients. In addition, the unit is the first in the country to use a new tracking system which allows staff to monitor patients more closely.

This post is designed to support the busy clinical, cancer diagnostic and endoscopic services.

Main duties of the job

Some roles and responsibilities will change depending on the experience and interests of the appointee. A job plan must be agreed between the successful appointee and clinical lead in accordance with Schedule 3 of the Terms and Conditions - Consultants (England) 2003.

The post holder will join the current gastroenterologists in providing outpatient and inpatient clinical support to the general gastroenterology service. Key attributes include high level expertise in gastroenterology, a keen interest in innovation and teaching and an ability to work creatively with a range of doctors, nurses and administrators.

Key responsibilities:1. Clinical GastroenterologyThe new consultant will join with his/her colleagues in the GI bleeding rota and will take part in the emergency on call rota on a 1 in 8 basis at the Barnet site. There is no Acute General Medical on call or general medical ward cover component to this post. It is expected that the appointee will contribute to the emergency medical and GI bleeding on call services as required and agreed at the job planning process Delivery of cancer and routine endoscopic services will be at the Chase Farm site.2. Performance managementThe post holder will work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:- Clinical efficiency- Accuracy in diagnostic coding- Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates- Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively.3. Medical Staff Management

The post holder will work with colleagues:- To ensure Junior Doctors hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal- To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as delegated by the Clinical Director- To be responsible for the appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors and non- consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director.4. GovernanceThe post holder will work with colleagues:- To review clinical outcomes and to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director.- To participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented- To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis5. Strategy and Business PlanningThe post holder will work with colleagues:- To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.- To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director- To participate in the development of a high quality service in line with the priorities of the Trust and national policies/guidelines6. Leadership and Team WorkingThe post holder and will work with colleagues:- To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in National initiatives.- To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, other clinical and non-clinical directorates.7. 9. Revalidation and Appraisal

. The Trust has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process.
