Job title - Senior Specialist Pharmacist - Surgery 8a (0.4WTE)
An exciting opportunity has been developed within our surgical pharmacy team to lead the provision of a clinical pharmacy service to surgical pre-assessment and the Day Surgery Unit.
- Provide advice on the use of medicines in the perioperative period
- Assist with medicines reconciliation within the surgical pre-assessment clinic
The postholder will also be an integral member of the surgical pharmacy team, providing a clinical pharmacy service to a surgical ward, contributing to treatment protocols and guidelines and training and education of staff.
Potential candidates will have a background in clinical pharmacy with some experience surgery. They will ideally have an independent prescribing qualification (or working towards) and have some experience of working in clinics and/or managing own caseload. They will be confident working with a multidisciplinary team and be able to build a good rapport with patients attending the surgical pre-assessment clinic. They will have well-developed interpersonal skills and an ability to deliver against key targets and objectives.
Main duties of the job
- Act as a deputy for Principal Pharmacist when necessary
- Regular active participation in speciality ward rounds to support safe and effective use of medicines with these areas
- Participation in pre-operative assessment clinics, taking an accurate medication history and providing advice on the use of medicines in the perioperative period.
- Contributing to evidence based prescribing guidelines
- Effective control of drug expenditure
- Education and training of HCP's within the specialist area
- To act as a clinical role model, and support training and supervision of junior members of the pharmacy team
- Development and implementation of clinical guidelines
- Effective control of drug expenditure and management of processes regarding high-cost drugs
- To participate in audits and practice research
- To work with the clinical risk team to minimise the risk of medicines

The Pharmacy department is a friendly, progressive and expanding unit dedicated to providing the highest standards of pharmaceutical care and service across all three sites, with clinical teams across many different specialities including renal, liver, oncology, paediatrics, intensive care, medicine and surgery. The pharmacy department have recently played a pivotal role in the implementation of electronic prescribing system and have strategic plans for the development of more consultant and independent prescribing pharmacists, with a particular focus on expanding the pharmacist role within clinics. This role will aim to highlight the benefits of a pharmacist in a surgical pre-assessment clinic.
