Job summary

The opportunity has arisen to join our inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service as a CNS. We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic, motivated nurses to provide advanced clinical expertise and innovative approach to work with the team in providing a high-quality service to patients with IBD. The nursing service includes nurse run outpatient clinics, telephone clinics, coordination of biologic services and an email / phone advice line.

The role also involves assessing and diagnosing patients, teaching and supporting patients, families and other health care professionals, carrying regular research and audit and working alongside the other nurses in the team to develop nursing care.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide an autonomous inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service, using advanced clinical judgement and knowledge of the specialty.
  • To take responsibility for own evidence-based practice and implement and add to the body of knowledge that supports nursing practice within IBD.
  • To manage patient caseloads autonomously and run clinics independently once competencies achieved.
  • To manage patient flare line, alongside other CNS team members.
  • To partake in inpatient reviews and patient education.
  • To effectively and safely manage continuous medication use, and undertake appropriate monitoring required to ensure patient safety.
  • To lead and innovate nursing practice within IBD, both within the Trust and through local networks.
  • To review and develop IBD guidelines, protocols, and policies for the Trust.
  • To work alongside & develop all staff within the multidisciplinary team, providing support, advice, formal and informal education.
  • Participate in departmental audit (local and national) and implementation and evaluation of audit outcomes / national standards.
  • You should have excellent communication skills, together with the ability to organise and motivate others, as well as demonstrating significant initiative.
  • The post holder (Nursing) must comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors.

ROYAL FREE INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE TEAM

The Royal Free Hospital has an extensive gastroenterology nursing service that provides advanced clinical care, support, advice and consultancy to patients referred into our outpatient department. Services include general gastroenterology clinics for routine, urgent and cancer referrals, GI physiology, endoscopy diagnostic services and multi-diagnostic clinics in conjunction with University College London Hospitals. The service also provides specialist scleroderma clinics, an inflammatory bowel disease/ nutrition service and an interventional endoscopy service which is internationally recognised.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To manage an agreed caseload, under the supervision of the nurse specialist team, using in depth knowledge of the patient / client group.
  • To instigate all diagnostics including radiological and investigative procedures following Trust guidelines.
  • To act as an expert role model in nursing care to other nurses within the team and nationally, as required.
  • Participate in IBD related audit, both locally and nationally.
  • To document all care given using the Trust guidelines.
