Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional individual to be appointed as the interim Head of R&D Office at the Royal Free Hospital. This is offered as a fixed term contract or secondment for 12 months.

Reporting to the interim R&D Director, the post-holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, high quality research and development (R&D) office and research management and governance (RM&G) service at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL).

Acting as the most senior trust expert on research governance and research compliance matters, they will lead on the effective implementation of research regulatory standards at the trust and ensure MHRA inspection readiness at all times.

They will manage the implementation and maintenance of proportionate systems to ensure the highest standards of health research are met and ensure delivery of a high standard of RM&G service support to the trust.

Main duties of the job

The role will ensure the delivery of the Trust's research strategy through the development of an effective portfolio of support and partnership working with, and for, stakeholders across the Trust.

They will play a leading role in the set-up, monitoring and reporting of RM&G Key Performance Indicator's (KPI's) and the performance management of these KPI's.

The post holder will set and monitor the core operational priorities, and work packages for the R&D office team in line with the trust R&D strategy and national performance indicators. This will include the continuous monitoring of the service and any barriers to its success and identifying effective solutions to service barriers in the process.

The post holder will manage and lead the trust R&D office and ensure that the R&D office team is supported in meeting good research governance and ethical standards and is maintained as an effective, motivated and responsive team.

Central to the delivery of the next 5-year R&D strategy, they will be responsible for undertaking a major review of the structures and functions of the R&D office in 2024 and implementing any subsequent changes. They will ensure continuous improvement of the service by conducting annual appraisal of the service and delivery against strategic objectives. The postholder will oversee and ensure the readiness of RFL to sponsor regulated studies within the strategy delivery timeframe.
