Job summary
Obesity is a lifelong condition which can have a debilitating effect on patients' mental and physical wellbeing, and patients frequently fail to lose a significant amount of weight without medical and psychological input. This newly developed programme is to pilot a Renal Weight Loss Clinic as recommended by the Getting It Right First Time report. This will improve health equality amongst patients by providing improved access to the kidney transplant waiting list and/or bariatric surgery, through focused MDT, psychological interventions and the use of a recommended weight loss drug, Semaglutide.
Over two-thirds of dialysis patients receive their treatment at an in-centre dialysis unit despite known benefits of home dialysis. The work undertaken in this 0.8WTE post is part of a renal transformation programme aimed at improving equity to and quality of renal services, and to support patients undergoing kidney transplantation. We are looking for someone who can a) input into our renal weight loss MDT and clinic, b) support our dialysis programme by ensuring patients receive psychological support to ensure they receive treatments most appropriate for them and c) to work alongside our liver transplant psychologist to offer brief psychological interventions to our patients on the liver ward.
Main duties of the job
* To provide specialist psychological assessment & treatment on an individual basis as appropriate, and to facilitate a group Weight Management Programme for individuals with obesity prescribed the weight-loss medication Semaglutide (Ozempic)
* To contribute to MDT meetings and offer specialist psychological advice and consultation on managing weight loss to non-psychologist colleagues
* To contribute to the collection and analysis of outcome data from both individual and group interventions and utilise research skills for audit and research purposes as required
* To work closely with the renal frailty MDT to offer advice, guidance and psychological assessment of patients considering maximum conservative management
* To work closely with the pre-dialysis team to offer support for patient decision-making around home dialysis
* To offer brief psychological interventions to our ward patients under the care of the liver transplant team
