An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our coding team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a Clinical Coding Team Leader to assist with the supervision of the clinical coding team.
You will assist supervising the coding team to achieve an efficient and responsive clinical coding service. The post holder will assist the Deputy Head of Coding as directed to include issues associated with clinical coding, including the achievement of targets with respect to timeliness, completeness, accuracy and depth of coding within deadlines.
The successful candidate is required to demonstrate the Trust values, the responsibilities of the job description and person specification. You should have proven extensive clinical coding experience, hold the NCCQ and be able to code a wide range of specialties. You must be able to demonstrate management skills, have a flexible approach to work, be able to manage workload and work as part of a team to tight deadlines.

Main duties of the job
To provide team leading to the RFL coding team to the achievement of an efficient and responsive clinical coding service through the day-to-day supervision of clinical coding officers.
To assist the Deputy Head of Clinical Coding as directed on issues associated with clinical coding, including the achievement of targets with respect to timeliness, completeness, accuracy and depth of coding within deadlines.
To provide training and mentoring of all new clinical coders, through provision of training, and mentoring.
To undertake day-to day advice and mentoring, guidance and active development of more junior members of the coding team in coding rules, knowledge bases, office procedures and other related issues that result in high quality coding outcomes.
To abstract and analyse complex and sensitive clinical information from a variety of source documentation and translate this into a coded format in line with National Standards using ICD10 and OPCS4. Enter final encoded data onto the appropriate computer systems.

- To lead the team to meet strict local, national and contractual deadlines for the assignment of clinical codes using classifications ICD-10 and OPCS 4, to ensure accurate and timely reimbursement for each patient treated within the Trust.
- To assist the Deputy Head of Clinical Coding in the on-going development of the clinical coding process, in particular with respect to greater clinician involvement, improved data quality and more streamlined process. Understand the importance of PbR and HRGs in the above context and assist in the workings of this.
- Using a range of electronic complex source documents to undertake abstraction, analysis and translation of clinical data for all in-patients and day-case finished consultant episodes (FCEs), following the rules and conventions of ICD-10 and OPCS 4.4. Use judgment to translate information where diagnosis / procedure is not transferable to exact codes.

To support the training of Clinical Coding Officers including new staff by checking their work until they have reached a satisfactory standard, liaising with the Deputy Head of Clinical Coding regarding coding competency and identifying any need for more significant training support e.g., external courses.
- To liaise with the Trust clinical staff and attend meetings with clinicians on a regular basis in order to achieve collection of complete and accurate data. Maintain an ongoing expertise in order to discuss and validate complex clinical data and to ensure that defined data standards are met. Represent the Clinical Coding Department at Multidisciplinary Team Meetings if required.

To assist the Deputy Head of Coding to provide line management to coders and oversee their area of responsibility to ensure deliverance of high quality clinical coding service in the Trust, ensuring all necessary steps are taken to reach the target of 100% completeness within the specified timeframe and taking initial action to deal with any problems that may occur.
- To provide training, mentoring and advice to staff on coding issues, and provide advice where appropriate to trust staff (and employees of external organizations) following queries or as a result of error reporting.
- To line manage first stage of employee relations issues including sickness absence and performance management.
