Job summary

Supports the development of a culture of patient safety by

  • Leading on the patient safety agenda and ensuring tangible reduction in patient harm
  • Leading and co-ordinating the patient safety strategy which will incorporate developing, reviewing and updating policies and processes to ensure that patient safety and quality improvement is embedded
  • Ensuring that the patient safety strategy includes the safety improvement priorities agreed by the Trust Board and that progress against these are reported to the Executive and the Trust Board
  • Review and implement all policy developments around patient safety
  • Ensuring the Trust is up to date with evidence based thinking on patient safety and develop external links and relationships with the patient safety leads
  • Working closely with clinical staff to further develop local ownership of patient safety strategy
  • Supporting colleagues in other departments and directorates in translating learning into service improvement
  • Providing trust oversight of the triangulation of divisional patient safety issues
  • Providing constructive challenge as appropriate to ensure divisional reporting is robust
  • Interpreting national guidance related to patient safety and preparing papers for the Trust Board on the best implementation approach
  • Deputising for the Group Deputy Director of Patient Safety & Risk, as required.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide project management, planning and change management knowledge and expertise
  • Provide advice, support and guidance on incident management
  • Analyse complex information from claims, and incident investigations
  • Leading the management of patient safety incidents and the sharing of learning from these incidents.
  • Explain strategy and organisational decisions in relation to patient safety matters
  • Co-ordinate and attend meetings in relation to patient safety
  • Provide expert advice on matters relating to patient safety
  • Support the development of capability and capacity for the Trust's Quality Strategy
  • Analyse incident data relating to patient safety incidents and ensure that this information is utilised within the patient safety strategy
  • Take responsibility for the development, implementation and evaluation of the corporate patient safety strategy
  • Provide the Patient safety and risk department with timely, accurate and reliable information on project progress and performance
  • Support the management of relevant resources within the allocated pay and non-pay budgets for the Patient Safety and Risk Team
  • Lead and supervise the specialist staff within the Patient Safety and Risk team.
  • Lead the development of training programmes related to patient safety
  • Lead the development of a patient engagement strategy for patient safety
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of information resources as required within the patient safety quality improvement projects
