There is an exciting opportunity to join our Trust as a substantive NHS Consultant post based in the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) in the Institute of Immunity and transplantation (ITT). This role has a 50% clinical (early phase clinical trials with a focus on hepatobiliary cancers) and a 50% research component.About the role: The successful candidate will be appointed as a substantive Consultant at the Royal Free London. They will be expected to develop experimental cancer medicine and make full use of the CRF and the outstanding biomedical research available at the IIT and across UCL. Close collaboration with the UCL Cancer Institute and Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre will be encouraged to consolidate and sustain UCL's position as a global leader in cancer drug development. There will be a particular focus on hepatobiliary cancers, and the candidate will be expected to become a key member of the MDTs and develop a research program in this area. This is a 10PA post which is has a 50% NHS commitment and 50% research component.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

* Develop early-phase clinical trial portfolio for solid tumours

* Establish an immune-oncology research program with successful third-party grant funding.

* Carry out high quality innovative research and publish in leading journals.

* Help develop infrastructure for oncology research at the Royal Free London.

* Contribute to the teaching of medical and non-medical undergraduate and postgraduate students.

* Develop or maintain a high profile as academic clinician at national and international level.

* Attend clinical departmental Consultant meetings.

* Contribute to the educational and research needs of oncology staff

* Critically analyse clinical research literature and attend national and international conferences

* To maintain CME and GCP updates and skills

Main purpose of the job

This is a fully funded NHS post (10PA) with a 50% academic component. The successful candidate will be appointed as a substantive Oncology Consultant with a view to later applying for Associate Professor of Oncology status with UCL. There are three new Consultant posts in experimental cancer medicine at RFH, with a clinical focus on HCC (in post 2023), renal/melanoma and HPB (this post). They will be expected to develop experimental cancer medicine on the Royal Free site and make full use of the CRF and the outstanding biomedical research available across UCL. Close collaboration with the UCL Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre will be encouraged to consolidate and sustain UCLs position as a global leader in cancer drug development. For this post there will be a particular focus on HPB cancer and the candidate will be expected to become a key member of the MDT and develop a research program in this area. The HPB oncology service is based at the Hampstead site, and is currently supported by 1 RFH medical oncologist based at the Hampstead site as well as SpR and CNS support, as well as clinical oncologists based at Hampstead who also cover the HPB radiotherapy practice/MDT. The post-holder will join the oncology team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) as a 10PA substantive consultant.

This post will cover:

Early phase clinical trials (RFH); HPB (RFH) ;AOS/inpatients (RFH)

The post-holder will work with existing oncology colleagues: Drs Tim Meyer and Alexa Childs in the CRF and Drs Roopinder Gillmore, Arun Kaur and Swee Wong on the HPB Oncology team. This post will be essential for the expansion of the early phase clinical trials portfolio and the development of experimental cancer medicine at the RFH site.

They will also participate in the inpatient consultant-led attending system on the RFH Hampstead site (1.5 weeks per year).

  • Medical degree
  • Higher academic degree e.g. MD/MS or PhD, or evidence of an equivalent level of attainment in research publications
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and completed General Professional Training, or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
