Job summary

The Associate Director of Strategy will work with the Chief Transformation Officer, Group Executives and the Board to lead the Royal Free Group's ambitious strategy agenda. The postholder will work with Group and Business Unit teams to lead the development of specific strategy programmes and projects.

The Associate Director of Strategy will support the annual planning process to ensure that strategic priorities are embedded in the annual plan.

The postholder will be responsible for strategy programme delivery, including influencing system wide stakeholder involvement and leading matrix working.

The post holder is required to be highly flexible, operate with a high degree of autonomy and work using their own initiative as it is likely the responsibilities will change significantly on an ongoing basis.

The post holder will work to the Chief Transformation Officer and will delegate as required.

About us

Job description

Job responsibilities

Delivery of a portfolio of large scale Group wide strategy programmes

  1. Lead the development of strategic initiatives as requested by GEMM and/or the Board.
  2. Be accountable for the development, delivery and evaluation of a portfolio of Group wide strategic initiatives working closely with the Group functions, Business Units and other stakeholders.
  3. Ensure the delivery of programmes and projects to the expected quality outcomes and budget performance in accordance with agreed critical milestones
  4. Lead on strategic initiatives that involve service transformation and partnership working across the North Central London ICS
  5. Lead on the development of business cases for major capital developments, including identifying third party support and funding. Manage the approvals process with the ICS, NHSE/I and DH where relevant.
  6. Ensure patient and staff engagement and involvement in all aspects of the planning, delivery and evaluation of service improvement projects.
  7. Report on progress to the Group executive and Board on delivery of proposed service models and how delivery will be managed through challenging financial constraints.

Leadership of Strategy Programmes Management

  1. Operationally lead and manage the Trusts priority strategy programmes, as directed by the Chief Transformation Officer.

  1. Plan, coordinate and Chair meetings as part of the strategy programme management process, which includes communicating highly complex and sensitive information.

  1. Provide assurance to Executives and to Group Executive Committees that strategy programmes are progressing in accordance with expectations and that stakeholders are engaged.

  1. Manage third party suppliers delivering service improvement projects within the Trust ensuring value for money.

  1. Manage the overall scope, objectives and priorities for the strategy programmes as requirements evolve

  1. Oversee and QA development of briefs, templates and also business cases (where appropriate) for relevant programmes.

  1. Be flexible and look beyond existing structures, ways of working, boundaries and organisations to deliver required outcomes

  1. Present sensitive and sometimes controversial information to diverse audiences in a constructive professional manner eliciting engagement and strategies for moving issues forward rapidly.

  1. Develop collaborative partnerships across the local integrated care system

  1. Work closely with all stakeholders on securing support and engagement with the programme, influence and work through individuals from other teams to deliver

  1. Work alongside the Chief Transformation Officer to develop and work to a robust approach to prioritisation. Support the Group to prioritise the Strategy Programmes and Projects based on those that deliver the greatest value.
  2. Use data and wider information to identify opportunities for the organisation and inform strategic priorities, ensuring data is robust, evidenced, and caveated where appropriate
  3. Establish an approach to effectively measuring ROI/benefits delivery in order to support effective prioritisation decisions.

Quality Assurance

  1. Ensure the Group has a robust approach to Quality Assurance of all strategy programmes and projects.
  2. Support the Chief Transformation Officer to prepare and present papers, as requested.
  3. Responsible for ensuring all strategy programmes and projects have completed a risk and quality impact assessment and that all relevant actions are identified and in place to mitigate risk to the service.
  4. Advise and monitor quality outputs as a result of service reconfiguration ensuring that all changes implemented deliver to the agree and national performance indicators.

Communication & Engagement

  1. Engage a wide range of stakeholders across the Group including Group Executives, Divisional Directors and their management teams, other Corporate leaders and their teams to ensure strategy programmes are delivered in the most effective way utilising the skills and expertise of multidisciplinary teams
  2. Engage with the Organisational Development team, the Clinical Practice Groups team, the QI team, and others to ensure that strategy programmes are resourced and supported in the most effective way to ensure successful delivery of the outcomes and benefits.
  3. Engage with commissioners and system partners in order to collaboratively deliver improved value for NCL patients.
  4. Work with the Royal Free Charity to develop a joint strategic programme (where appropriate) and support joint working and fundraising.
  5. Responsible for developing and maintaining a consistent and clear communication strategy, which keeps the Group updated and engaged in the priority programmes and projects

  1. Provide leadership in strategy across the Group, deploying team skills and resources to effectively deliver against priorities
