Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a full-time permanent band 8D Head of Planned Care Performanceto join the Royal Free London Cancer Performance and MDT department.

You will have a proven track record of service delivery and have significant NHS operational management experience in a dynamic, patient focused environment. All-round first-class communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work under pressure, at times managing several conflicting priorities. Excellent staff management skills and experience of managing planned care pathways to achieve key performance targets is required. You will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team members.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of performance driven service management experience in the NHS and will be looking for the opportunity to develop their skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient strategic and operational management of the Trust RTT and Diagnostic programme. Significant successful experience in management and coordination of very complex and often competing programme objectives is required. The individual will be empowered to direct the strategy and make decisions within their delegated authority. The purpose of the role is to provide strategic leadership for the programme team and agree common vision, values and objectives whilst being accountability for aspects of project planning and delivery and to be an expert in the field.

The programme's focus is to provide high quality hospital services that enhance hospital experience for patients: through setting imaginative new standards in the physical and built environment, through a programme of improvements to the range of support services, and fostering a strong overarching patient-focused approach.

Job responsibilities

The key duties of the Post Holder are:

  • The Head of planned care performance is ultimately accountable for the success of the RTT and Diagnostic programme in meeting business needs of the Trust and ensuring efficient use of the Trust estate.
  • Report to the Programme Board.
  • The Head of planned care performance needs to be able to combine realism with openness and the clarity of expression to communicate the Strategies vision effectively. This will involve highly complex situations where there will be significant barriers to understanding.
  • The Head of planned care performance will work in partnership with the Divisional Director of Operations to ensure the full engagement of all staff in the trust in the delivery of each divisions RTT and Diagnostic strategy.
  • The post holder will deputise for the Group Director of Planned Care when required.
  1. Owning and communicating the vision for the RTT and Diagnostic Programme and being its champion, providing clear leadership and direction through the life of the programme.
  2. Providing overall direction and leadership for the delivery and implementation of the strategy with personal accountability for its outcome,
  3. Accountable for the strategy programmes governance arrangements by ensuring the programme, including any investment, is established and managed according to appropriate requirements and quality.
  1. Advising and assisting clinical and management team heads on the investment required to deliver the RTT and Diagnostic programme so that the desired benefits can be realised. Plan and manage a highly complex RTT and Diagnostic strategy, appropriate to the various stages of individual projects, taking account of the Trusts overall financial position.
  2. Responsible for the production and maintenance of key programme information, including the Programme co-ordination, publication of individual project briefs and the preparation of business cases as required for sign-off by the Trust. Ensure preparation of regular reporting against key performance indicators as required to meet the information requirements of executive directors, management executive and Board of Directors
  3. Maintaining the alignment of the programme to the organisations strategic direction and taking responsibility for addressing the evolving clinical or business needs and emerging issues that impact on the programme.
  4. Provide management and direction to senior staff where required.
  5. Lead by example and focus on delivery.
  6. Build productive relationships across the programme team and have access to and credibility with key stakeholders.
  7. Ensure that robust project management mechanisms and systems are in place to successfully deliver significant projects.
  8. Develop effective risk and issue management tools to be used within all project management activities.
  9. Analyse and present highly complex or highly contentious information clearly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing, to internal and external stakeholders in the atmosphere of proposed major change where there may be barriers to understanding.
  10. Lead on operational delivery standards for endoscopy on all sites, including managing staff on all sites for the lifetime of the project to ensure business as usual sustainability.
