Job summary
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its Ophthalmology services and we're looking for a passionate Consultant to lead in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus, Cataracts, and Neuro-Ophthalmology.
This is an exciting new role designed to support the growth of our department and enhance specialist care across our sites. You'll deliver high-quality secondary care, paediatric urgent care, and strabismus services for both children and adults.
Our Paediatric Ophthalmology clinics are fully multidisciplinary, working alongside Orthoptists and Optometrists. The Adult Strabismus service benefits from Advanced Orthoptists, a Clinical Fellow, and Specialty Doctors for additional support.
The post is full-time, with 10 Programmed Activities (PAs):
- 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) including patient-related admin
- 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

Main duties of the job
This is a substantive Consultant post to maintain the capacity of the department in managing high volume of referrals into the Trust from an increasing geographical area.
It is expected that the post-holder will have a sub-speciality interest in Paediatric ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus and Neuro-ophthalmology and be able to deliver on all degrees of disease management(including elective and acute surgery) as well as provide support, training and supervision for junior medical staff (inc. non-training grades), allied health professionals, and Ophthalmic Nurses.
The appointee will work with colleagues within the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust to deliver a comprehensive ophthalmic service to the population of Mid and South Essex.
